George Lee hits a basket in the lane during Wauneta-Palisade’s win over Hyannis.

Broncos add two to win column; no games until Dec. 28

The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team ran its record to 5-2 last week with victories over South Platte and Hyannis.
WP was dominant in its win at South Platte (2-4) Friday. Duncan Rector, Caid Doetker and Joel Maris came out firing on all cylinders to help WP to a 27-5 lead at the end of the first.
The Broncos extended their lead in the second quarter with six players scoring. WP led 53-23 at halftime.
The third quarter continued the scoring trend for WP. Dennis Cavanaugh scored six points in the quarter and finished the game with 12 points in three quarters.
Rector totaled 21 in points despite sitting in the fourth quarter with WP holding a 75-27 lead. Maris scored 14 points.
The offensive explosion didn’t carry over early in the contest when the Broncos hosted Hyannis (2-4) the following night.
The Broncos were first to put points on the board against the Longhorns, then went on to take a 10-7 lead. But as time ran down in the quarter, the WP offense stalled. Hyannis scored the final eight points of the quarter, leaving the Broncos trailing 10-15.
Two Rector baskets pulled WP back to within one. Following a Doetker free throw, Hyannis scored six straight points before Ben Anderjaska ended the run. Anderjaska’s basket would be WP’s final one of the quarter, leaving the Broncos trailing 17-24 at halftime.
