Barrett books berth in this weekend’s State Meet in Omaha

Wauneta-Palisade junior Colton Barrett placed fourth Saturday at the D-2 District wrestling tournament and earned a trip to the state meet.
Barrett opened the meet with a loss to Coy Wolken of Hay Springs. Barrett bounced back with a win over Jebb Ginkens of Sioux County. With a pin against Lucas Honstein of Hemingford, Barrett advanced to the consolation finals and a trip to Omaha.
Barrett was bloodied in his match against Honstein, but bounced back from a first period bloody nose to pick up the pin in the second period.
WP Coach Danny Schluckebier credited Barrett with showing mental toughness in the match.
With his berth secure, Barrett faced Wolken once more. The pair ended the first period with a 0-0 tie. An escape by Wolken gave him the advantage, but Barrett earned a takedown and a 2-1 lead. From there Wolken went on the offensive. Barrett earned a reversal in the third period, but lost the match 4-13.
