Brody Nordhausen provides valuable leadership to the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team.

Seniors lead WP basketball team to 19-6 record

Things haven’t always been easy during Brody Nordhausen’s four years playing basketball for Wauneta-Palisade.
The Broncos won 10 games total during Nordhausen’s first two seasons. But as a junior and senior, Nordhausen has helped lead a resurgence in WP basketball.
The addition of Greg Gaston last year was certainly a spark for the program.
In the past two season the seniors have led the Broncos to 15-9 and 19-6 records, as well as this season’s elusive state tournament berth.
“Our two seniors were outstanding in every sense of the word,” said WP Coach Dave Kuhlen. “Brody and Greg will be very successful people in the future, that is an absolute lock. We will miss them, but look forward to a new team next year.”
Kuhlen said Nordhausen has been the absolute rock of the program during his career. Starting out as a guard when the Broncos struggled to fill out a roster, Nordhausen came into his own later in his career.
“He really thrived when he was able to become a post, which is more natural to him,” Kuhlen said. “His numbers were never what they could have been because he tended to get into foul trouble a lot attempting to cover up others’ mistakes.”
Nordhausen led the Broncos with 141 rebounds and finished the season with 199 points.
Kuhlen credited Gaston’s transfer into the WP school system as allowing the Broncos to “skip a few steps jumping from being a struggling program to one of the better programs in the area.”
He added that Gaston has been a great example for the younger Bronco players to see what an elevated skill level and elevated confidence level can do out on the court.
Gaston led the Broncos with 511 total points, including hitting 34 percent of his three pointers (64-189) and 72 percent of his free throws (93-129), while also leading WP with 95 assists and 66 steals.
Gaston was third on the team with 111 rebounds.
Junior Cash Yearous was second on the team with 263 points. Yearous also made 34 percent of his three-point attempts.
The Broncos’ district championship was the high point of the season for Kuhlen.
“I love the video of the end of the game and watch it at least every other day,” Kuhlen said. “Only six schools in our class win a district champions plaque, so our kids should be very proud of it.”
