WP FFA chapter headed to state convention

Four teams will represent the Wauneta-Palisade FFA chapter during this week’s State Convention.
The AgriScience team qualified Nov. 7 with a first place finish at districts. Faith Burton placed second overall, Zoey Boos placed fifth, Garrett Hanna eighth, and Hunter Miner ninth. Burton brought home a purple ribbon and the rest received blue ribbons. Colby Hoskovec will be the team’s alternate at the state convention.
AgriScience teams are made up of all first-year students who are freshmen or sophomores. The competition  covers general knowledge. All freshmen and sophomores can take the test, then the students with the highest scores make up the team for state.
WP FFA advisor Rod Gaston said WP hasn’t had a AgriScience team qualify before and they were surprised and pleased.
Advisor Teresa Hayes prepared the group.
In February the Vet Science team placed first at districts and the Nursery and Landscape team was second.
For the Vet Science team, George Lee and Burton tied for second, Boos was third and Michaela Dukes placed fourth.
Hayes worked to prepare the team with the help of Southwestern Veterinary Service’s Caitlin Pollmann.
Lee was the only returning member from last year’s team which placed third at state. Lee finished first as an individual.
Gaston said the team is very intelligent and has very good knowledge of animal systems.
The Nursery and Landscape team was led by Austen Rozelle’s second place finish. Ben Anderjaska placed fourth and Tucker Boos was eighth. Braxton McKinney rounds out the team. The same group made the trip to state last year and Gaston is hopeful they will crack the top 10 this trip.
