Having spent much of his previous teacher career in Culbertson, John Kershaw said he’s very familiar with Wauneta-Palisade Schools District’s staff and teachers.

New WP teacher comes with experience, knows staff

You can call John Kershaw a lot of things — teacher, father, grandfather, coach — but just don’t call him a rookie.
One of four new teachers hired this year for Wauneta-Palisade Schools, Kershaw, 59, brings 37 years of experience as a teacher and administrator to the job. He will teach social studies and physical education.
A native of Silver Creek, Nebraska, Kershaw has spent much of his life in Culbertson, where he landed his first teaching job in 1983. He taught a variety of subjects in Hitchcock County schools for 24 years and served as athletic director there for 19. In the last 11 years, he has been elementary principal at Hitchcock County, which he notes won national awards under his administration.
He eventually took early retirement, but “didn’t like that.” When he saw the opening in Wauneta-Palisade last spring, he thought it would be a good fit.
Part of that is personal connections. He has known Wauneta-Palisade Superintendent Randy Geier since they were both in college at Kearney State, and coached and taught Elementary School Principal Joseph Frecks in Culbertson. He also is familiar with the W-P staff and members of the community.
“I’ve always been impressed with Wauneta and their drive to succeed,” Kershaw said. “I loved being an administrator, but I miss being with the kids. I think that keeps you young.”
