FFA Greenhouse showing signs of new life

The Wauneta-Palisade FFA greenhouse is starting to show its first few breaths of life. FFA Advisors Rod Gaston and Teresa Hayes recently planted the first seedlings in the greenhouse. Gaston stated that because of a hiccup with their potting soil he and Hayes tag teamed the planting. “We still have seeds to plant though for students,” said Gaston. Pictured left, Gaston discusses planting lettuce with student Monique Gooden.
Students in FFA, and some of the ag classes have helped out with the entire construction process. “I really like it because it is giving us hands on teaching,” said junior Lake Reikofski. Pictured right, from left, Joel Maris, Dalton Harchelroad, Lake and Evan Nordhausen put together a bench that seedlings and plants will be set on.
Currently there is lettuce, spinach, petunias, snap dragons, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and much more planted in the greenhouse. When ready, the school hopes to sell its produce to the community. Gaston noted that the official game plan, including prices and hours the greenhouse will be open for sales, is still being drawn up. “Hopefully plants will be ready by May 5, which is in line with normal growing seasons,” said Gaston. The greenhouse recently received funds, donated by Western States Bank “Giving From the Heart” program, for a hanging basket cart. The A-frame cart will hold floral hanging baskets.
