Day places fifth at State Speech

Junior Emily Day finished fifth at last week’s State Speech Championships. Also performing at the event was the Oral Interpretation of Drama team.
Day was also member of the OID team which was scheduled to perform at the same time as her individual performances.
Sponsor Joy Farr said the weather was horrific in Kearney, so rather than walk from one performance to the next Farr drove everyone back and forth between performances.
Day had chosen a piece about the idea that standardized testing has corrupted education, putting the end result and federal funding first while students go by the wayside.
Farr said Day’s first preliminary performance in Poetry was spot on.
“Her pace was right on, she was believable and compelling,” Farr said, adding that Day had to step up her game with a third place finish.
Day got second in her final preliminary performance, making her a long shot to make the finals.
