Ila Sjuts

    Ila Sjuts, 90, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, July 29, 2018, at her home in Columbus.
    The funeral service was held on Thursday, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humphrey, Nebraska, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the Humphrey City Cemetery. Visitation was held on Wednesday, at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and continued on Thursday until service time at the church in Humphrey.
    Ila B. Sjuts was born July 1, 1928, on the family farm near Breslau, Nebraska, in Pierce County, to Henry J.C. and Bertha M. (Steffen) Seevers. She was baptized on August 26, 1928, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osmond, Nebraska, and reaffirmed her Christian faith through confirmation on March 29, 1942 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, Nebraska. Ila attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 1946. She then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for one year. On April 2, 1950, Ila was united in marriage to Erwin L. Sjuts in Norfolk, Nebraska. The couple farmed near Humphrey, Nebraska, until retirement.
    Ila was an active partner on the farm. She raised a large garden, canning and putting up the produce, baked, sewed, helped with the butchering, and raised four children. She was known for her dill pickles which she put up each year. Ila was a very active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Humphrey where she was a member of the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) serving as president, secretary and treasurer. She taught Sunday school and was part of the quilting group. She was active in Kin Seekers serving as secretary and historian.
    Ila loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She collected angels and would keep a record of who gave them to her and when she received them. At Christmas time, Ila would display her angels on a special Christmas Tree.
    Ila is survived by son-in-law Rex (Kathy) Walgren of Wauneta, Nebraska; grandchildren Jaime (Jason) Weiss of Cambridge, Nebraska; and Jeremy (special friend Crystal Littrel) Walgren of Wauneta, Nebraska; daughter Sandra (David) Cole of Liberty, Missouri; grandchildren Matthew (Molly) Cole of Kansas City, Missouri; and Eric (Rachel) Cole of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; son David (Linda) Sjuts of York, Nebraska; grandchildren Denise (Mark) Kuehn of Hartington, Nebraska; and Sara (Stephen) Gallagher of Centerville, Ohio; son Robert “Bob” (Lynn) Sjuts of Columbus, Nebraska; grandchildren  Jakob (Tara) Sjuts of Omaha, Nebraska; Anthony (Amanda) Sjuts of Omaha, Nebraska; and Brooke Sjuts of Omaha, Nebraska; 21 great-grandchildren; brother Vernon (Marlene) Seevers of Norfolk, Nebraska; sister-in-law Joan Waldman of Platte Center, Nebraska; sister-in-law Barb Sjuts of Humphrey, Nebraska; sister-in-law Shirley Sjuts of Fremont, Nebraska; brother-in-law Marvin (Genene) Sjuts of Madison, Nebraska; numerous nieces and nephews.
    Ila was preceded in death by parents Henry J.C. and Bertha M. Seevers; husband Erwin Sjuts;  daughter Diane Walgren; brothers Harold, Ernest, Eldon, and Paul Seevers; sister Vida Sunderman
