Harold Lee Maris

    Harold Lee Maris was born Feb. 28, 1922 to Charles L. Maris and Carolyn Elsie (Donze) Maris 10 miles south and four miles east of Wauneta, Nebraska.
    Harold was educated his first eight years in country school and moved to Wauneta, Nebraska to complete his high school education. He graduated from Wauneta High School in 1940.
    Harold was drafted by the US government and served our country during World War II. Harold was drafted in the summer of 1942 and was honorably discharged on Dec. 31, 1945.
    After the service he went to help his brother on the farm in Rexford, Kansas where he met Beverly Jo Childs. The two were married Sept. 8, 1947 and moved back to Nebraska. The newlyweds lived in several farm homes before moving to the farm south of Wauneta where they made their home.
    To this union four sons were born Charles L. Maris, Jon A. Maris, Joe L. Maris, and Jeff S. Maris. Harold and Bev farmed and raised cattle during their married life. They lived on the farm until 1985 when they moved into Wauneta. They lived there for over 30 years until moving to Imperial, Nebraska for their final years.
    Harold was a Mason for over 50 years. He was also a member of the McCook Elks Club and a member of the VFW in Wauneta.
    Harold enjoyed boating, camping and coyote hunting with family and friends. Harold enjoyed the weekly poker games. The family took a trip each year after harvest to go camping on Lake McConaughy, exploring the Black Hills in South Dakota or exploring the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming.
    Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carrie, wife Beverly Jo; son Charles Maris and great-grandson Sawyer Giovando; brother Clarence; sister Dorothy; brothers-in-law Harold Moss and George Whitmer; sister-in-law Bernice Maris; nephews Jim Maris and Wendell Wertz; great nephew Marty Wertz and niece Donna Hudson.
    Survivors are Harold and Bev’s three sons Jon, Joe, and Jeff, their wives Diana, Rene and Laurie; grandchildren Jordan (Jason) Pecoraro and Saje (Steven) Giovando of Arizona; Jayden (Ashli) Maris of Imperial; Randi (Lincoln) Hunter of Oklahoma; Jonee (Brady) Chilewski of Arcadia; Jacob Maris and fiancé London of McCook; Joel Maris; great-grandchildren Kobe, Braxton, Gavyn, Anna Maris; Savino and Sylus Giovando; Chaynee and Nixyn Hunter; and Charlee Chilewski; and sister Evelyn Whitmer of Ft. Pierce Florida.
    Funeral services were held Monday morning, May 6, 2019, 10:30 a.m. MT at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta, with Rev. Gary Hunt officiating.
    Interment followed at the Eden Cemetery, rural Wauneta, Nebraska, with full military honors.
    Visitation was held at services on Monday, May 6, 2019.
    A memorial has been established to the Maris Family to be designated in Harold’s memory.
