Broncos ground Falcons, open season with win

The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos’ football started its season off on the right foot, picking up a 30-16 win over Class D1 Hitchcock County.
    WP dominated the opening half.
Hitchcock County received the opening kickoff and advanced to just over midfield before stalling on fourth down.
The Broncos quickly took advantage. Two runs by Dalton Harchelroad moved WP from its 35-yard line to the Falcons’ 16. From there Austen Rozelle took over, gaining 16 yards on the Broncos’ third offensive play and scoring from 2 yards out on its fourth play.
The Falcons immediately turned the ball over following the WP kickoff, allowing WP to score two plays later. Two runs by Dennis Cavanaugh put the Broncos in the end zone.
The Bronco defense stepped up on Hitchcock County’s third possession. WP allowed 14 yards on the drive and set itself up on the Falcons’ 25-yard line after holding on fourth down.
Gains of 8 and 17 yards by Harchelroad moved the ball to the two-yard line. Rozelle once again took advantage, scoring and increasing the score to 22-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.
