Wauneta to use USDA funding for water work

The Village of Wauneta will most likely use money from the federal Department of Agriculture to dig two wells and install a water line, work that must be done by the end of the year.
Village Trustees Page Johnston and Rick Einspahr, Superintendent Bill Bischoff and David Blau of Miller and Associates, the village’s engineering firm, met with USDA officials in a Friday morning conference call to discuss financing for the project.
It could be the first concrete step in ending a saga that began nine years ago, when unacceptable levels of naturally occurring arsenic were found in city water.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Health and Human Services has ordered the village to solve the problem by the end of this year.
