Weiss resigns as county commissioner

After nearly 20 years as a Chase County Commissioner, Don Weiss, Jr. has resigned his position with the county.
Weiss did not attend the board of equalization meeting July 2, but left a letter of resignation for commissioners Dave Hogsett and Chuck Vette.
Weiss said he was tired and felt that Dennis Kunnemann’s election during the primary election left the county in good hands.
The decision as to who will fill Weiss’ position until Kunnemann officially takes over Jan. 1, 2019 belongs by statute to Chase County Attorney Arlan Wine, Treasurer Cindy Schoenberger and Clerk Debbie Clark. The trio had 45 days to fill the position, but didn’t take that long.
After Hogsett and Vette accepted Weiss’ resignation at Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting Kunnemann, as selected by Wine, Schoenberger and Clark, was sworn in.
Kunnemann said he hadn’t expected to take office this soon. Kunnemann had been attending commissioners’ meetings to get a feel for the position, saying “he was wanting some time to learn.”
