On March 20, 2002 while responding to a fire at which over 100 firefighters were fighting a blaze, 42-year veteran of the Palisade Fire/Rescue Squad Bernie Schutte lost his life in the line of duty. In honor of the 15-year anniversary of this tragic loss the Department paid tribute to Bernie with this display in front of the fire hall. Department members said the display served to say, “Thank you for your service, Bernie. May you rest in peace, brother. Your mission has been completed, your brothers and sisters of the Palisade Fire/Rescue will continue to take your watch, as you continue to watch over us all! Honor-Respect-Never forget.”
