Dallis Breese of Wauneta almost missed out his chance to adopt his dog, Jackie, at the McCook animal shelter. It’s a good thing he didn’t, because they’ve become inseparable and she’s become a fixture as a visitor to area nursing homes and hospitals.

Wauneta dog not just another pretty face

Jackie is nothing if not versatile. Not only does she comfort people at area nursing homes and hospitals, but she also finds time to be a calendar model.
Of course, it helps if you have a lot of free time on your hands because you’re a dog.
A 10-year-old Jack Russell/Pekingese cross, Jackie accompanies her owner, Dallis Breese, 81, of Wauneta, just about everywhere he goes. They’re pretty inseparable, especially given that he almost didn’t get a chance to adopt her.
He got her when she was 9 months old as a companion animal for his wife, Alvina, who was disabled.
“Her doctor kept saying she needed to get something like that,” Breese said.
Alvina was reluctant at first but finally warmed to the idea, so he went to the animal shelter in McCook.
None of the animals there caught his eye, and he was about to leave when one of the workers pointed out one he missed.
His description of the moment is familiar with anybody who’s ever adopted a dog.
“I looked at her and I guess that was it,” he said with a smile.
He left to pick up some supplies, but also missed out. Another person came in and wanted the same dog, but the shelter worker told her Jackie already was spoken for.
And it proved to be a good match. “She came in and made herself to home,” Breese said. “She just took right to everybody.”
While Jackie hasn’t had formal companion animal training, the Breeses’ daughter, Brenda Broughton, a nurse, arranged to have a doctor certify the dog as a companion animal for anxiety.
Two days after Jackie found her new home, Alvina was hospitalized in Imperial.
