Wauneta Board of Trustees meet for budget workshop

The Wauneta Village Board of Trustees met Wednesday, Aug. 23 to review a preliminary budget for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2017.
    Board members reviewed separate budget categories for water, sewer, electric, general fund, police, street, cemetery, fire, park, library, community building and other funds. The majority of the nursing home’s budget is reviewed separately by the nursing home committee, and is presented to the board at a later time.
    The FY 2017 budget will be finalized during a budget hearing held in conjunction with the regular September meeting on Sept. 11.

Water
    The village has been participating in a University of Nebraska-Lincoln study to reduce the arsenic levels in the village’s water supply.
    The preliminary budget presented to the board included a $450,000 line item for the arsenic water project and necessary well no. 4 upgrades.
    The budget also included a $65,000 line item for a water main that crosses the railway and $10,000 to upgrade water meters. There is still as much as $465,000 in bonds/loans that may be needed for water projects in the upcoming fiscal year.

Sewer
    Within the sewer budget, the preliminary budget included $245,000 for erosion control at the village’s lagoons. The village also plans on spending roughly $150,000 for the ongoing sewer main project. In bond, loan and grant revenue $100,000 has been set aside for the sewer main project and $24,000 for possible purchase of a standby generator.
    The sewer budget also included $30,000 for the possible purchase of a used sewer jetter or generator and $15,000 for cleaning.
