Village finally sells apartment buildings

After months of trying, Wauneta officials have finally sold village-owned apartment buildings — and for the original price they wanted.
Village trustees voted during their regular meeting Nov. 12 to sell the buildings to Southwest Nebraska Properties LLC of Wauneta for $60,000.
Work on selling the building began in earnest in July, when trustees began taking sealed bids for a 60-day period ending Sept. 10. Trustees set the minimum bid at $60,000, but failed to receive a single one.
In an Oct. 8 meeting, trustee Page Johnston suggested simply soliciting offers without setting minimum bid and allowing 30 days for those to come in. That drew three offers by the Nov. 12 deadline.
Before approving Southwest Nebraska Properties’ bid, trustees met in closed session to discuss the three offers.
After that, the board reconvened in public session and accepted the $60,000 offer.
Landen Lawless of Southwest Nebraska Properties said he didn’t submit a sealed bid during the earlier period because “I wanted to see what came about” from the process.
He said he will continue to rent out the apartments.
