Village board hears audit report

Terry Galloway with Almquist, Maltzahn, Galloway and Luth was present at the Village Board of Wauneta’s special meeting Monday night. Galloway presented the village’s audit report for the year ending Sept. 30, 2016.
Galloway began his review of the Village’s audit by telling the board the audit is unmodified, meaning everything in the village’s financial statements is true and accurate, the highest level a board can receive from an independent CPA.
During the audit report Galloway pointed out an operating loss in the water fund. He suggested the board consider raising water rates to bring the fund to a self-supporting level.
He noted the village has good overall cash reserves and have done a good job holding spending down throughout the year.
After presentation of the village’s audit, Galloway provided the board with a comparison of how the Village of Wauneta compares with other communities of similar size in Nebraska.
Villages similar in size to Wauneta normally ask for $195 per person in taxes; Wauneta asks for $168.
He noted that villages of similar size typically spend $150 per capita on administration. Wauneta’s administrative functions are much lower, $64 per capita.
Costs for the village park, police and cemetery run a little higher than other villages. Galloway noted villages of similar size typically spend $50 per person on parks. Wauneta spends $91 per capita on parks, which includes the pool.
In a similar trend, other similar-sized villages typically spend an average of $65 per capital on police services. Wauneta spends $81 per capita on police services.
Another comparative category where Wauneta’s spending is higher than average is the cemetery. Wauneta spends $22 per capita and comparable villages spend $15 per capita.
