Trustees prepare for sales tax info meeting

The Wauneta Village Board spent much of its Jan. 8 regular meeting going over the presentation it was set to make to tell voters about the proposed 1 percent village sales tax.
Village Clerk Evelyn Skelton showed trustees the PowerPoint presentation that was to be the centerpiece of that informational meeting Jan. 16 at the community building..
The vote will be conducted by mail. Ballots will be mailed out between Jan. 21 and Feb. 1. They must be in the County Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. Feb. 12.
They can be either mailed in or delivered by hand to the clerk. They also can be turned in or mailed in earlier than the due date.
In a rare split vote, the Wauneta Village Board in November voted to put the 1 percent sales tax to a public vote in February. The lone “no” vote was Trustee Bob Goings, who said he feared it would hurt business in town.
It’s aimed at stabilizing the finances of the village-owned Wauneta Care and Therapy Center, which faces financial problems due to shrinkage of both Medicaid reimbursements and patient numbers.
Trustee Page Johnston, whom the other trustees chose to conduct the informational meeting, said that while there has been some talk of using any extra money raised on other village projects, the real aim behind the tax is to support the nursing home.
An earlier feasibility study on the facility said if it manages to have at least 30 residents, it will remain viable, at least in the short term.
The home currently has 34 residents, but some are short-term and income from those can’t be counted on for long, Johnston said. And the bump in residents comes at the same time Medicaid reimbursements from the state continue to fall.
