Scouts’ pinewood derby back with a bang
The Scout House was bursting at the seams Saturday evening when Wauneta Cub Scouts Pack No. 1 and Wauneta Boy Scouts Pack No. 1 hosted the first pinewood derby held in several years.
The scouts and their leaders worked hard to make the pinewood derby an event again after several years absence. Scout Master Shane Anderson said the group hopes to make the event an annual occurrence once again.
In fact, they are already making plans to purchase a new track. Anderson said they hope to hold the pinewood derby at the Wauneta Community Building next year to allow room for community members who would like to attend.
Eight scouts raced on Saturday. At the end of the day prizes were awarded for the fastest three cars. Camden DeWester took top honors for the car he built with his dad, Chad. Tristen Baker earned second place honors and Cord Nichols third.
The audience also had a chance to inspect the cars built by the scouts and vote for their favorite. DeWester took top honors in the People’s Choice Best of Show as well.
