Pheasant season opener a big weekend for area

One of Nebraska’s most popular hunting seasons—pheasant—opens this Saturday across the state.
Game and Parks officials are predicting another good season in the southwest Nebraska counties, based on early scouting reports on the pheasant population.
Game and Parks Conservation Officer John Lee, who covers Chase and Dundy Counties, as well as parts of Hayes and Hitchcock, said he’s seen a lot of pheasants while working in the area.
He’s also seen a lot of the birds near Culbertson during his work with the UNL Pheasant Project, which is studying pheasant numbers, mortality rates and movement.
Pheasant is a big season for him, he said, probably overshadowing firearm deer season a bit.
“I am really busy for the next month,” he said.
He suspects hunters this weekend will have to work some for their birds with a lot of crops, especially corn, still unharvested.
However, there are more acres enrolled now in southwest Nebraska in the Game and Parks’ Open Fields and Waters Program, he said, providing private land for public hunting.
Lee offered some reminders to hunters this weekend.
It is against the law to carry loaded shotguns in vehicles, he said.
And, even though it’s not required, he highly recommends that hunters wear orange while in the field.
When transporting game, the pheasant’s head or a foot must remain intact, he said.
Nebraska’s pheasant season continues through Jan. 31, 2018.
