Since he’s reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 this month, Chuck Vette is retiring from the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department after 29 years.

Chuck Vette to retire from WVFD

Chuck Vette says it’s going to be pretty difficult to not respond when he hears Wauneta’s fire bell ring.
    That’s not really surprising, after 29 years on the village’s Volunteer Fire Department.
    Vette, who will turn 70 this month, is retiring Sept. 21 from the department. He has reached the mandatory retirement age.
    He’s spent most of his life in Chase County and has lived in the Wauneta area since 1967.
    “[When] I moved to town, I had some friends that were on [the department] and they encouraged me to join,” he says. “I thought it was an opportunity to serve, and interesting. You could see there was a lot of hard work.”
