Chase County Historical Society dinner and annual meeting enjoyed by attendees

Wednesday, Sept. 6, the Chase County Historical Society met for its annual meeting at the Champion Community Center. About 35 attendees enjoyed a meal of cornish hen, rice, peas and a salad bar provided by the Champion Junior Women’s Club.
Cowboy Poet John Oliver of Scottsbluff performed several poetry pieces he had acquired over the years. Oliver noted that this was the first time he had been asked to speak at an event.
“Usually I share poems with people over a drink at the bar or while I’m getting coffee,” said Oliver.
Oliver is a native of Wauneta and a graduate of the Class of 1950. He shared some of his memories of growing up in Wauneta which included pitching baseball for the Wauneta Town Team, hunting and fishing. He has also trekked nearly 450,000 miles across 48 states and several Canadian Providences on his motorcycle.
