Brenda Brandt, in front, is completely surprised and overwhelmed when her mom, Elna Johnson, and other family members appear in Denver as the Newspaper Person of the Year is announced Saturday, April 22.

Brandt named Newspaper Person of the Year

“Splendid” was a word echoed between two sisters and two brothers Saturday evening, April 22, as they gathered together in Denver. It was a word their father always used to say, and it was a fitting remark for this occasion.
Last weekend was a big one for the Johnson newspaper publishing family. The Nebraska and Colorado Press Associations each held their conventions April 22. Johnson Publications newspapers were well represented in the awards ceremonies at the events.
At the conclusion of the Colorado Press Association convention, Brenda Johnson Brandt, publisher of the Holyoke Enterprise, was named the 2016 Newspaper Person of the Year for the association.
She is the daughter of the late Loral Johnson and Co-Publisher Emeritus Elna Johnson of Imperial.
Brandt, who was taken totally by surprise of the honor,  said, “I was humbled beyond belief.”
After the shock of receiving the award, Brandt was shocked by the family and staff members who surprised her at the Colorado Press Association awards banquet Saturday evening in Denver.
