WP opens volleyball season with win over Hitchcock County
The Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team opened its season with a win Thursday at Hitchcock County.
WP showed some jitters early in game one. Bronco attack errors left WP trailing 2-6 to start the match.
“With so many new girls playing new roles this year, it is taking a little bit of adjustment,” coach Terra Higgins said.
Wauneta-Palisade came back to tie the match at 7-7 and the game remained close with ties at 11, 15, 17 and 18.
Four kills and a double block down the stretch gave WP the cushion it needed to take the first game 25-19.
Service aces by Alexa Sandman, Cali Cox, Payton Yearous and GraCee Goings gave WP plenty of momentum to start off the second game. But a series of Bronco attack errors turned a 13-9 advantage into a 15-17 deficit.
With freshman libero Goings serving, WP took a 20-19 lead. The game remained close down the stretch. Three kills by Haylee Sandman and an ace from C. Cox gave the Broncos set point, 24-22. The Falcons put up a fight, however, holding off four set points by the Broncos.
