Gladys Elaine Hoff - January 28, 2010


Gladys Elaine Hoff was born April 13, 1926, in Imperial, Neb., to Ralph D. and Minta E. (Speer) Grosbach and the granddaughter of Dr. H.H. Grosbach, an early sett­ler of Chase County.
As a young girl she grew up on a farm and attended school near Enders, Neb., graduating from Chase County High School, Imperial, in 1943. Gladys, a regent scholar, furthered her education by receiving a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1947.
Gladys married Dwight E. Hoff on Aug. 11, 1947, after his return from service during WWII, and the couple settled in Wauneta, Neb.
Gladys and Dwight entered a partnership in the owning and operating of a grocery store in Wauneta for 20 years before moving to Imperial in 1968. The couple owned and operated Hoff’s Superfoods in Imperial for 12 years before retiring in 1980.
After their official retirement, Gladys and Dwight started their second careers in woodworking and decorative painting which they continued until recent.
Gladys passed away on Thursday evening, Jan. 28, 2010, at the St. Francis Medical Center, in Grand Island, Neb. She was 83 years of age.
Gladys was a member of the United Methodist Church of Imperial, and an organist for many years, the Alpha Xi Delta Woman’s Fraternity, Eastern Star, the Chase County Hospital Auxiliary, and the National Decorative Artists.
Gladys had many hobbies including tole painting, traveling, reading, piano playing and working crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed fishing and raising flowers in her yard.
Survivors include husband, Dwight, of Imperial, Neb.; son, Karl Hoff of Carbondale, Colo.; daughter, Lynne and husband, David Uhl of Denver, Colo.; son, Paul Hoff and wife, Jennie, of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren, Jolie Gill and Gennette Gill; sisters-in-law, Alberta Grosbach and Pauline Grosbach and brother-in-law, Vincent Gennaro.
Gladys was preceded in death by daughter, Susan Gill; sister, Maxine Gennaro; and brothers, Ronald and Donald Grosbach.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, 2010, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Imperial, with Pastor Kay Alnor and Rev. Robert Call officiating.
Pianist and accompanist was Mrs. Joan Lantry and music was by Imperial United Methodist Church and Mrs. Marcia Lindau.
Casketbearers were Rod Beemer, Jim Brown, Irvin Bauerle, Duane Grosbach, Joel Grosbach and Bob Walgren.
Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb.
A memorial has been established to the Chase County Hospital Foundation or the Imperial Public Library.
