Arthur Fortkamp - July 23, 2014

Arthur Frederick Fortkamp departed this life Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Neb., at the age of 91. He was born May 28, 1923 at the family home on the south divide Wauneta to Henry C. and Sophia (Haarberg) Fortkamp.
Art grew up on the family farm southwest of Wauneta. He attended St. Paul Lutheran parochial school in rural Dundy County. As a young man he worked hard on the family farm where they raised wheat, cattle and hogs. He enjoyed playing softball with family and friends.
Art was united in marriage to Nina Georgia Brown on June 8, 1952 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on the south divide. They made their home in Wauneta. They farmed with Art’s brother Lavern and father Henry for several years. In later years they purchased and moved to the Fortkamp family farm on the south divide where they farmed and ranched.
Art was a lifetime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed his life as a farmer. Art took pride in his farming and continued farming until his death. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Art was known for his kind and generous personality. Family was a very important part of Art’s life. Art was a devoted husband and enjoyed spending time with his brothers and sisters and his many nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his parents Henry C. and Sophia (Haarberg) Fortkamp; brothers William Fortkamp and wife Ada, John Fortkamp and wife Anna, Fredrick Fortkamp and wife Merle, Ervin Fortkamp and wife Viola, Albert Fortkamp, Emil Fortkamp and wife Opal, and LaVern Fortkamp; sisters Hilda (Fortkamp) and husband William Roschewski, Velma (Fortkamp) and husband Albert Doetker; brother-in-law Wendell Long; father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Rossa Brown; brothers-in-law Ken Brown and wife Idella, Bob Brown and wife Helen; sisters-in-law Lorraine (Brown) and husband Dennis Grimes, Imogene (Brown) Welch and Betty (Eaton) Brown.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years Nina Fortkamp; brother Martin Fortkamp and wife Erma of McCook, Neb.; sister Violet (Fortkamp) Long of Wauneta; brothers-in-law Don Welch of Champion, Neb., and Don Brown of Parks, Neb., and many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 29, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Wauneta, with Pastor Keith Wellman officiating.
Organist was Karen Christner with music by St. Paul’s Lutheran choir.
Casketbearers were Jed Doetker, Jon Welch, Jim Long, Dan Brown, Lynn Fortkamp and Mike Brown.
Interment followed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Wauneta.
A memorial has been established in Art’s memory.
