Avis Nadine Suda - May 03, 2014
Avis Nadine Suda, age 92, of Palisade, Neb., passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the Community Hospital in McCook, Neb.
Nadine was born May 6, 1921, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to parents Oscar Harold and Maude M. (Graham) Weston. She was one of six children. Growing up Nadine attended schools in both Iowa and Nebraska, one of which was the Estelle School north of Hamlet, Neb. During one particular year of grade school, she attended over five different schools. During high school Nadine attended school in Palisade. She was an honor roll student up until her sophomore year when she stopped going to school in order to care for her mother. In 1971 Nadine received her GED. She then continued her education at McCook Community College, receiving a license in Nursing Home Administration.
On Sept. 2, 1944, Nadine married Frank Suda in Oberlin, Kan. To this union two children, Helen (Frankie) and Don, were born.
Nadine chose many different career paths throughout the years. From 1941 to 1942 she worked in Oklahoma City, Okla., as a Pattern Carrier building airplanes during WW II. Returning in 1942, Nadine began working as a telephone operator, continuing until dial telephones came to Palisade in the 1950s.
In the late 1950s Nadine owned a dry cleaners and spent time driving the local school bus. Frank and Nadine also owned the Dairy Creme in Palisade during the 1960s as well as the Gambles Store until the early 1970s. It was also during the 1970s that Nadine served as the Administrator of the Nursing Home in Benkelman until leaving to help cut and bale hay on the family’s custom hay business. She enjoyed being a mechanic’s wife, picking up repair parts for Frank.
Nadine spent many years as a caretaker, caring for her mother, mother-in-law, father, children and grandchildren. Although Nadine shared many fulfilling careers throughout her life, she considered being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother her greatest accomplishment.
Nadine was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in McCook, The Woman’s Club of Palisade, Rebekah Lodge, Ladies Bridge Club and Eastern Star.
She was a Cub Scout Leader, enjoyed gardening, playing cards and was an excellent cook who was always trying something new. Nadine was also a licensed airplane pilot, earning her license in 1962. She deeply loved her poodle, Beau, who was her constant companion for 17 years.
Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Suda in 2002; grandson Robin in 1990; sisters Mildred Andrew and Deloris Morgan; and brother Ocia Weston.
Nadine is survived by her son Don (Mary) Suda of Palisade; daughter Frankie (John) Miller of Palisade; brother Mark Weston of Indianola, Neb.; sister Betty Renner of McCook; as well as seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
