Sophie Mae Johnsen, 92, died peacefully on Jan. 2, 2014, in Lincoln, Neb.
Born Sophie Mae Gibson on June 12, 1921, in Galveston, Texas, she was raised in Washington, D.C.
Sophie married Clarence A. Johnsen near Laurel, Neb., on June 22, 1942, at Logan Center EUB Church—a quarter-mile from the farm where they raised three children, Carolyn, Steve and Diann, and worked from 1949 until their retirement.
Sophie was active in the Farm Bureau and in the Laurel chapter of the Eastern Star. During her last years on the farm, Sophie also worked as an administrative assistant in the Wayne State College science department.
After Sophie and Clarence retired to Lincoln in 1989, she accumulated more than 11,000 hours of volunteer service at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital and the Lied Center for Performing Arts. She also volunteered for the Lincoln Public Schools as Helping Hands Hannah.
Always a fitness enthusiast, Sophie won the senior ping-pong division at the Cornhusker State Games in the early 1990s.
Sophie spent her final years in assisted living at The Legacy Estates with her dear companion cat, Ivan.
She was preceded in death by husband, Clarence; mother, Cosette; father, John Claire; and sisters, Cosette (Saslaw) and Patria (Hunsinger).
She is survived by all three children and their families, including five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
There was no visitation, cremation was chosen.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at the Eastridge Presbyterian Church, 1135 Eastridge Drive.
