Fred A. McDaniel, formerly of Lincoln, Neb., died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the Sunrise Heights Nursing Home in Wauneta, Neb.
Fred was born in Palmetto, La., on Aug. 16, 1917, to George and Carrie (Meyer) McDaniel.
Fred graduated from Palmetto High School and attended LSU until 1938, when he enlisted in the Air Force. He was a Technical Sargeant.
While serving in Lincoln at the Air Force Base, he met Elizabeth Klaus. They married in 1942, and made Lincoln their home. They had two sons—Fredrick and Cedric.
Fred was a machine design engineer at Goodyear for 30 plus years, retiring in October, 1980.
Elizabeth passed away in 1975.
Fred married Roslyn (Swanson) Backemeyer in September, 1977. Roslyn passed away in 2010.
Then Fred moved to the Imperial, Neb., area to be closer to family.
Fred loved gardening. His back yard in Lincoln was filled with beautiful roses, flowers, shrubs and trees. He fed the local squirrels and birds and was always looking for that squirrel-proof bird feeder.
He delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his grand-dogs and watching birds.
Fred is survived by sons, Fred (Liz Rieke) McDaniel, San Mateo, Calif., and Cedric (Sherrie) McDaniel, Wauneta, Neb.; grandchildren, Eric (Marilyn) McDaniel, Carrie (Matt) Terryberry, all of Imperial, Jake McDaniel, Ft. Bragg, N.C., and Kait McDaniel, Flagstaff, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Annika and Lleyton McDaniel, Markenna, Carson and Parker Terryberry, all of Imperial.
Other family members include stepson, Ken (Pat) Backemeyer, and Sandra (Robert) Schindler, all of Lincoln; step-grandchildren, Chris (Courtney) Backemeyer, Tom Backemeyer, Janelle (Arthur) Rosenfeld and Michelle (Chris) Ziboh; and step great-grandchildren, Christopher Ziboh and Tasman Rosenfeld; several nieces and nephews and their families, cousins, other family and friends.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 11, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m., at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home, 4040 “A” Street, Lincoln.
Funeral services are Friday, July 12, 9 a.m. at Butherus, Maser and Love.
A memorial has been established in Fred’s name.
