James Edward "Jack" Herring - February 24, 2013


James Edward “Jack” Herring, 88, of Scottsville, Va., died Sunday evening, Feb. 24, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1924, in Greene County, a son of the late Bernard and Fannie (Shifflett) Herring.
On Feb. 24, 1945, he married his wife of exactly 68 years, Beatrice Marsh at Rock Hill in Charlottesville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant children; a grandson, Michael Sours; four brothers, Willy, Bernard, Henry, and Robert; and two sisters, Mary Sullivan and Bertha Wood.
Mr. Herring had been baptized into the Baptist Faith. He had formerly been a self-employed truck driver. He loved dogs. He enjoyed working on his trucks and loved watching professional wrestling. Having played the guitar when he was younger, he grew to enjoy country music, especially Johnny Cash. He and his wife traveled every year to Hiltons, Va., to attend the Carter Family Fold shows.
Jack is survived by his wife, Beatrice Herring of Scottsville; seven children, Wayne Herring and wife, Carol, of The Villages, Fla., Diane McKenney, of Glen Allen, Gaylan and husband, David Garrett, of Richmond, Bruce Herring and wife, Diane, of Scottsville, Brian Keith Herring of Scottsville, Marie and husband, Wayne Sours of Barboursville, and Joyce and husband, Mick Majors, of Wauneta, Neb.; a sister, Alice Campbell of Crozet; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jack and Edna Armistead.
The family received friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home.
