Alvie Wilkins - November 14, 2011

Alvie F. Wilkins, a former resident of Box Butte County, Neb., passed away Nov. 14, 2011, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colo. Alvie was born Nov. 27, 1928, in rural Hemmingford, Neb., to Ernie and Laura (McCart) Wilkins.
At the age of 5 the family relocated approximately 10 miles northwest of Alliance, Neb., to a farm raising cattle and horses which is where Alvie attended country school traveling a mile by horse and buggy.
He graduated from Alliance High School lettering in football and running sprints and hurdles in track along with other sporting activities.
He attended one year at Western Nebraska Community College after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif., where he was honorably discharged after four years.
Once back in Alliance, he was employed by the City of Alliance as a police officer and deputy sheriff in Box Butte County where he received numerous police academy certifications. He went on to police in Torrington, Wyo., Holdrege, Neb., and many years in Chase County (Wauneta, Neb.,) where he retired with his wife of 38 years, Lenore A. (Lee) Wilkins.
Alvie was an active member of the VFW and American Legion where he served as commander in chief. His passion throughout his life was raising longhorns, wrangling, dancing, stock car racing, motorcycling, gardening and always a faithful Nebraska Cornhusker and Bronco fan. He always volunteered his time helping others and working with the schools spending time coaching children in boxing, rodeoing, baseball and basketball.
Alvie is survived by his wife Lenore A. (Lee) Wilkins of Lakewood, Colo.; one son, Montie (Wendy) Wilkins of Gillette, Wyo.; two daughters, Cindy (Roger) Cassel of Alliance, Neb., Susan Wilkins of Scottsbluff, Neb., and three step-daughters from Colorado: JoAnn Ivory, Cheryl (Don) Vaughn and Karen (Bill) Oliver. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Irvin (Fairy) Wilkins, Twin Falls, Id., and Gordon (Linda) Wilkins, Lodgepole, Neb.; one sister, Genevieve (Jimmy) and (Pud) Hufford of Minatare, Neb.; along with many nieces and nephews.
Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Edward Wilkins and sister Iona Engel. He was also preceded by a twin brother and sister who passed during infancy.
