Shirley Barnes - September 23, 2011
Shirley Ann (Novacek) Barnes was born Aug. 12, 1933, to Joseph Charles and Anna Irene (Schmidt) Novacek in Hamlet, Neb.
She grew up in Benkelman, Neb., and graduated from Benkelman High School in 1952.
Shirley married Charles “Keith” Barnes on June 28, 1952, in Benkelman and to this union seven children, Duane, Debra, David, Dwight, Diana, Daryl and Daniel, were born.
The family first settled in McCook, Neb. In 1959 they moved to a farm north of Wauneta and in 1968 they relocated to Imperial.
Shirley was a homemaker and also was employed as a cook/dishwasher at Jack’s Place restaurant in Imperial for 30 years.
Her hobbies included playing cards (rummy), embroidering and family gatherings.
Shirley passed away Friday morning at the Dundy County Hospital, Benkelman. She was 78 years of age.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Vince and Fred Novacek; sister, Luella Patton; grandson, David Keith Barnes; and granddaughter, Michelle Lee Nichols.
Survivors include son, Duane Barnes of Exeter, Neb.;
daughter, Debra and husband, Michael Nichols of Exeter, Neb.; son, David Barnes and wife, Mary, of Ogallala, Neb.; son, Dwight Barnes and wife, Sherry, of Enders, Neb.; daughter, Diana and husband, Tony Vandike of Bird City, Kan.; son, Daryl Barnes of Imperial, Neb.; son: Daniel Barnes of Omaha, Neb.; 21 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Novacek of Bartlesville, Okla.
Funeral services for Shirley Barnes were held Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, 2011, 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Imperial, with Pastor Fred Andersen officiating.
Pianist was Mrs. Marcia Bauerle and soloist was Mrs. Kristol Cummings.
Casketbearers were Duane Barnes, David Barnes, Dwight Barnes, Daryl Barnes, Daniel Barnes, Mike Nichols and Tony Vandike.
Honorary casketbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Interment followed at the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb.
A memorial has been established in Shirley’s memory.
