Neil Miller - November 25, 2010


Neil LeRoy Miller was born on Aug. 12, 1926, on the family farm southeast of Davenport, Neb. He was the only child of Ephraim Guy and Olive Jessie (Keim) Miller. He passed away Nov. 25, 2010, in Lincoln, Neb., at the age of 84 years.
Neil was baptized as an infant and confirmed as a young man at Christ’s Lutheran Church where he was a lifetime member.
Neil began his education at Pleasant Hill Country School and graduated from Davenport High School in 1944. He attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1949. After graduation, Neil returned to Davenport to farm with his father. He also taught Vet Ag Classes at the high school in Edgar for four years. These ag classes were for veterans returning from WWII.
He married Berneta Lemke, daughter of Herman and Amanda (Schnakenberg) Lemke on June 20, 1954, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Davenport. Into this union four children, Duane, Peggy, Gary and Patty, were born.
Neil was an active member of the Davenport Lions Club and Cemetery Board at the time of his death. He had also served on the 4-H Extension Board, Farm Bureau, Christ’s Lutheran Church Council, Davenport School Board and Achievement Board, and as a Boy Scout Troop 333 Committee Member.
Neil moved into Davenport in 1982 where he enjoyed yard work and gardening, while continuing to farm. In 1994, Neil received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award, which was given to recognize his farm that has been in the family for over 100 years.
Grandpa Neil had a special bond with each and every one of his grandchildren on a personal level. He knew what was really important in their lives and enjoyed traveling throughout the state to attend their activities and share that interest with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Berneta of Davenport; children: Duane Miller and wife Deb of Davenport, Peggy and husband Steve Russell of Lincoln, Gary Miller and wife Susan of Davenport, and Patty and husband Jon Anderjaska of Palisade; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Erin, Chris and Mason Schroeder, Ross and Justine Miller, all of Lincoln; Drew, Emily and Blake Miller, Ryan and Whitney Miller, all of Davenport; Betsy and Nik Johanson of McCook; Wes Anderjaska and Ben Anderjaska of Palisade and Eric Miller, Abby Miller, Daniel Russell, Courtney Russell and Will Anderjaska, all students at the University of Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Alvin Lemke of Geneva and Robert Bailey of Bevier, Mo.; sister-in-law Florence Hines of Fairbury as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., at Christ’s Lutheran Church in Davenport with Pastor Amy Krejcarek officiating.
Music was congregational hymns, “Borning Cry,” “Rock Of Ages” and “Go, My Children, With My Blessing” with Debra Johnson as organist.
Pallbearers were Ryan Miller, Ross Miller, Drew Miller, Daniel Russell, Eric Miller, Will Anderjaska, Wes Anderjaska, and Ben Anderjaska.
Interment was in the Davenport City Cemetery at Davenport.
Memorials have been established to Christ’s Lutheran Church or Davenport Cemetery Board.
