Nelson Dahl - September 16, 2010
Nelson Edward Dahl was born April 26, 1949, in Coos County, Oregon. His parents were Arthur Edward ‘Ed’ Dahl and Edith Grandstaff. He died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at his home in Palisade.
Nelson graduated from Fargo Central High School in Fargo, N.D., in 1967. While attending high school and college, Nelson worked for KTHI (now KVLY) television station in Fargo. He graduated from North Dakota State University in 1972 with a B.A. in Social Science.
He married Mary Sundby in 1971 at Fargo, N.D.
Dahl became an FCC Licensed Broadcast Engineer and joined his family in owning several radio stations in the Midwest, the last being at North Platte, Neb. After leaving the radio business, he returned to college and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education from Kearney State College in 1990. He received an Education Specialist Degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1992 and then enrolled in the Education Administration Doctoral program at the University of South Dakota.
Dahl taught in rural Dawson County, Nebraska, before becoming principal and Special Education Director at Faith, S.D., in 1990 and superintendent at New Underwood, S.D., in 1991. He returned to Nebraska and was superintendent and principal at Lynch Public School from 1992 until 2008 and at Wauneta-Palisade Public Schools from 2008 until present.
He married Cheryl Wells on Dec. 27, 1995, at Yankton, S.D.
He was an FAA Instrument-rated pilot, an FCC licensed HAM radio operator and an accomplished musician. He was a man of many interests: music, astronomy, reading and traveling but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Dahl was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include wife, Cheryl, of Palisade, Neb.; step sons: Tim and Deanna Mulhair of Palmyra, Neb., and Andrew and Ashley Mulhair of Wayne, Neb., and step grandchildren Jackson Mulhair and Arianna Mulhair; also sister Suzanne and husband Jim Pelton of Arnold, Neb., and niece Raine Pelton and nephew Oliver Pelton.
Memorial services were held Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. CT at the Palisade Grade School gymnasium in Palisade, Neb., with Father Val Bartek and Rev. Bonnie McCord officiating.
Pianist was Mrs. Sara Behrends. Musical selections chosen were “This Old House” by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Behrends and Mrs. Dawn Doetker and “Amazing Grace” by Mrs. Sara Behrends.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
Cremation was chosen and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
