Devon Maris - January 11, 2009


Devon Dean Maris, 49, of McCook, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Jan, 11, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.
He was born on May 11, 1959, at Imperial, Neb., to Dale L. and Orpha L. (Buffington) Maris. Devon grew up around the Wauneta area.
He attended Stratton grade school, then Weld County Community Center Special Ed in Greeley, Colo., until he and his family moved back to the Imperial area.
Devon then attended the training center in Imperial, Frenchman Valley Developmental Services, until he moved to McCook in 1984. He then worked at Southwest Area Training Services.
Devon enjoyed life to the fullest. He was active in People’s First and Special Olympics bowling and track. He went to Special Olympics state meets several times and won numerous medals.
Devon enjoyed doing various activities such as ceramics, crafts and playing cards. He loved traveling and spending time with family, friends, neighbors and especially enjoyed spending time with his cat, C.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leon Maris.
Survivors include his brother, Vern Maris of Wauneta; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and his SWATS family.
Graveside services for Devon Maris were held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, 10 a.m. MT at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb., with Rev. Kevin Fink officiating.
A memorial has been established to the Special Olympics Nebraska, Inc., P.O. Box 27085, 8801 “F” Street, Omaha, Neb. 68127-1506.
