In support of America’s troops, Wauneta-Palisade kindergarten and first grade students made posters saying “I Am Proud To Be An American” and “Thank You For My Freedom.” Students, kindergarten to 12th grade, were encouraged to bring stamped postcards to send to troops so they could drop a note home.
Russell Polly and Eunice Bodeman as 1931 classmates of Della Merrill attended her 90th birthday open house Saturday.
Eva Russell of Benkelman, Hilda Roschewski, Violet Long and Elsie Becker were visitors of Leta Brunkhorst. They enjoyed going through family pictures and visiting.
Jo Arenz spent Friday and Saturday in Kearney with Courtney Arenz and Jacob and attended Grandparents Day activities and lunch with Jacob.
Judy Polly was among members of the McCook Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma attending the 67th Rho State convention in Kearney Friday and Saturday.
Dorene Mohr, DeLores Taylor and Lorna Taylor spent the weekend in Parker, Colo., with Josh Taylor. Lorna enplaned for her home in Rosemond, Calif., Sunday morning.
Out of 61 teams competing, Wauneta-Palisade’s FFA livestock judging team of Abby Barger, Clif Wright, Grant Dixon and Leah Rundback took first place at the state convention, qualifying them for nationals in Louisville, Ky., in October.

Craig True and Lisa Wilson were named Boys and Girls Staters. Rod Haarberg was named Boys’ State alternate and Angi Buffington as Girls’ State alternate.
Phillip Hartzer will receive the State FFA Agri-Businessman degree during special ceremonies at the state convention in Lincoln. He makes the 37th member of the Wauneta chapter to receive the state’s highest honor, dating back to 1940.
Glen and Edna Christensen were honored on their 50th anniversary Saturday, April 2. A ten o’clock brunch was held at the Legion Hall, followed by an open house in the afternoon, hosted by their sons, Richard, Alvin and Neil, three daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren.
Houseguests of Glen and Edna Christensen have been Richard and Judy Christensen, Jay and Charles of Gaithersburg, Md., and Neil and Diane Christensen and Ann of Lincoln.
Lois and Richard Greeley were guests of Rhona and Brian O’Neil for Easter dinner at The Club, especially for the Greeleys’ 27th anniversary.
Lucille and Vearl McBride met Vaughn and Dee McBride, Devon and Darren in Colby, Kan., Friday and Saturday on their return to Burlington, Kan., after a week of skiing.
Sunday Easter dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kitt were Mr. and Mrs. Ron Kitt and girls of Ogallala, Marilyn Walker, Helen Rousey, Erma Newman and Erma Kitt. Three families of four generations were represented.

The town board signed an agreement giving the State of Nebraska highway access within the city limits to build the new highway.
Dale Wicke, 1963 International Farm Youth Exchange to Netherlands, left April 10 for Washington D.C. for an orientation before leaving for the Netherlands on the 19th.
Lt. and Mrs. Richard Fox left for Medina Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, April 6 after spending a few days in the Walter Fox home.
A dinner was held Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Nellie DeHart in honor of her daughter, Mrs. Roland Reed and family of Denver, who are moving to Miami, Fla. Family members were in attendance.
Mrs. Alice Stock and Bessie Decker sponsored a slumber party for 23 girls Saturday night at the Scout House for Theta Rho Club and their friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Grimm returned Friday from a three-weeks vacation spent in Mesa, Ariz., New Mexico and southern California. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lester Eickmeier of Palisade.

Will Wauneta have her streets east and west curbed and guttered this summer? With W.P.A. help the cost will be less. The government has appropriated $23,000 to be used on streets and alleys of Wauneta, according to Mayor G.S. Burham. E.E. Olmsted is circulating a petition in east Wauneta. Need an interested person to do likewise in the west end.
The C. E. Johnston funeral home is nearing completion, decorators are at work and the outside ready for the stucco. This week the yards are being leveled and trees planted.
Mesdames Stella Gregory and Frank Novacek were hostesses at the Library Saturday and served over 70 lunches.
Mrs. Preston Harmon of Loveland, Colo., spent the past week with her sisters, Mrs. R. E. Cocklin and Mrs. Ralph Grosbach.
Mrs. Henry Denker left on Saturday to visit her daughters near Lincoln.

SNOW — hard to estimate the amount in inches as it melted very fast but we believe fully a foot has fallen so far.
The mail carriers started out this morning but turned around before they reached the top of the divide as roads are impassable.
Why not shovel off your walks and it will make the town look as if it were alive?
Geo Theobald arrived last Friday from Wisconsin. He has rented the Dell Bratton house. Mrs. Theobald will be home shortly.
Fred Gaugher lost a valuable mare on the first by lightning.

Eight Wauneta-Palisade FFA members were to receive their State FFA degrees at the state convention in Lincoln. The eight included Sabrina Ward, Shawn Flaig, Tabby Christner, Abby Barger, Mandi Janicek, Leah Rundback, Seth Alberts and Elisha Madden.
Doris Ough and Ila Widger hosted an 80th birthday party for Ruby Ham at the Senior Center Friday morning with 24 present to enjoy coffee and rolls. She a supper guest of Diana and Kenny Ham and was surprised when many family members were also there to greet her.
Garrett Littlejohn of Manning, Iowa, visited his mother, Leona Littlejohn one day last week. Son Leonard of Chappell visited her Sunday, going to McCook for dinner.
Bob and Sharon Walgren and Bob and Pat Kitt went to Broomfield, Colo., where they visited Evelyn and Don Kanost and also attended a dinner theater where they saw “Never Too Late.” They returned home on Thursday.
James and Lana Skelton, Josh, Jesse and Kelsie were guests of Dennis and Barb Miller for dinner out to celebrate James and Lana’s 18th anniversary.
Jean Wach, Bill and Charlotte Christner and Letha Sailors attended the play, “State Fair,” at McCook college Sunday afternoon.

Les Stretch Jr. of Hamlet put his experience as an ag mechanic to use in operating his own farm repair shop, known as Country Repair. He started his business on his farmstead in September.
Confirmation service was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Sunday for Renelle Christner and Renea Haarberg with Pastor LaVern Brack conducting the service. A dinner, hosted by Karen and Loyd Christner and Elaine and Kent Haarberg, followed the service.
Members of the United Methodist confirmation class, Pat Taylor, Todd Krausnick, Derek Sandman, Jyl Applegarth, Michelle Vette, Aimee Tubbs, and Pastor Randy Smith joined other confirmation groups in Lincoln where some sites toured were the Wesleyan campus, the Planetarium, “Cornerstone” church, and a South Street Jewish synagogue. Cindy Sandman accompanied the group.
Angi Buffington was among FFVF students from Chase County going to Valley Forge and Washington D.C.
Marvin and Arlene Large had s Sunday picnic supper with Joe and Myra Large and children of Hayes Center.
Gabi Reiners, a former exchange student to Wauneta, returned last week to visit her host family, Don and Juanita Leonard. She is studying architecture at a West Germany university.

Orville Hamilton was returned to a two-year term on the village board and Lowell Grimm was elected to an equal term.
Mrs. Gladys Swanson was pleasantly surprised when 15 of her friends and neighbors came in for an “April Fool” party. After games and a social hour, refreshments were served by Mrs. Violet Sutherland and Mrs. Sylvia Moody.
Mrs. Dean Mitchell and girls, Mrs. Jerry Fanning and Terri, Leonard Jablonski and children and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Gloy and children attended the 4-H Kick-Off party in Imperial Saturday.
Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Carlson spent Sunday afternoon in Hayes Center where Dr. Carlson was in charge of the Polio vaccine fill-in program.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Large and family took ice cream and cake to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy Saturday evening to help Mrs. Kennedy celebrate her birthday.
Mrs. Claude Livingston, Mrs. Charlie Teply, Mrs. Harold Widger and Mrs. Frank Novacek surprised Mrs. Pat Redden with a coffee at her home last Wednesday afternoon honoring her birthday. The birthday cake was made by Mrs. Widger.

Elected to serve a term of two years as trustees for the village were Elviro Carpenter, Arch Counce and Glen Maddux. Trustees for the school board district 31 were H. E. Athey and H. G. Ferguson.
Wauneta High School musicians rated the highest in school history at the District Music Contest held in McCook with a total of 63 points, placing them second in Class C. They won five superiors, 8 excellents, 4 goods and 1 average. Bertrand was first with 74 points.
Marvin Athey, prominent high school student and athlete will be Wauneta’s representative at Cornhusker Boy’s State in June.
Galloping teas were held last week at the homes of Mrs. Frank Taylor, Mrs. G. L. Colbert, Mrs. R. J. Robertson and Mrs. Bert Maxfield.
The “Willing Workers” club spent a very pleasant afternoon quilting for Jessica Schermerhorn at her home. A “quilt display” was held with members bringing their quilts for display. There has been a marked improvement in the quilting now then those first made when the club was organized 12 years ago.

Our present town board holds as there was no election Tuesday. There was none held last year. We’d better give them a life term.
Fred Krausnick and wife left Monday for their home in Canada after a month’s visit with relatives and friends here.
Mesdames Krausnick, Hattie McBride, Bertha Smith and Emma Brown were in Wauneta Monday from Mt. Zion. Not a very nice day either, for women to be out; dust was blowing almost as bad as it was on Sunday. |

Wauneta Philanthropist Maryan Rider passed away at the age of 102. She is believed to have been Wauneta’s oldest resident.
DeAnn Doetker of Doetker Grinding and Joyce and Ted Grimm were recognized as the Wauneta Chamber of Commerce’s newest members.
Karl and Judy Polly spent March 12-17 in Los Angeles, Calif., visiting Jon Polly, his place of employment and other points of interest.
Don and Carey Harrison and Jessica and Austin McKillip went to Sioux City, Iowa, last week to watch Sarah Harrison play in a basketball tournament with the Concordia University team.
Sarah Harrison was one of two Nebraskans named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) Division II All-Americans.
Pat Gardner of Portland, Ore., and Sheila Knudson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, spent a few days with their mother, Margaret Greeley. Jim and Mary Greeley of Colorado Springs, Colo., Terry Greeley of Scottsbluff and Gary and Dewanna Greeley of Imperial spent the weekend.
Iris and Darrell Barnes of Brighton, Colo., spent the weekend with Harry and Elsie Petsch. They had dinner at the Pioneer Cafe Saturday evening in celebration of the Barnes’ 50th anniversary.
Joan and Ervin Kitt were Sunday guests of Kevin and Denise Janicek and Mandy, celebrating the Kitts’ 51st anniversary.

Wauneta High School students brought home the grand championship plaque in their division from the Inter-High Technical-Scholastic Contest at Mid-Plains Community College. Wauneta captured second place in both the scholastic and technical areas but scored enough points to claim the championship. This is the second time Wauneta has won the overall championship. Students placing either first or second in their areas were: Janel Applegarth, Lori Buffington, Danny Taylor, Brenda Lacy, Lisa Wilson, Phil Hartzer, Mark Bishop, Chad Nordhausen, Eddie Stretch, and Kris Steinke. Placing at McCook were Kirk Yost and George Fekkers, scholastic and Angi Buffington, home-ec.
New EMTs include Karen Steckman, Polly Kitt, Mike Lorimer, Thom Schneider and Lloyd Bley.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Buffington, Matt, Lori and Lisa joined a group from Wray, Colo., going skiing at Winter Park Monday and Tuesday.
Virginia and David Jesser of Denver, Colo., spent Wednesday to Friday with Ed and Hazel Novacek. Ed and Jo Arenz and girls and Marge Engell joined them Thursday evening for supper honoring the Novaceks on their 65th anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McCallum and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ough attended the luncheon at Wayne’s Steak House Saturday for Bob Kerrey and his talk which followed.
Derek Andrews was selected to the GPAC all-conference first team; Rod Haarberg was named to the second team and Teresa DeWester was named to the girls second team.

Car owners enjoyed a brief gas war when pump prices dropped to 21.9. Prices returned to normal on Monday — 33.9.
Mrs. Willis Schmitt enjoys an unusual hobby - making “book mark mice.” She has made about 300 mice in the last two years - some for gifts, and others to sell.
Mrs. Clarence Christner and Mrs. LaRue Gunderson entertained at a dinner for their father and grandfather, Frank Ochs’ 89th birthday. His five guests ranged in age 80 years and upwards.
Mrs. Henry Wicke, Mrs. Fred Fortkamp, Mrs. Andy Brunkhorst and Mrs. Gilbert Nordhausen attended a 4-H leaders all day meeting at Imperial Friday.
The Altar Society of St. John’s Catholic Church honored Ben Jussel with a covered dish dinner on his 80th birthday with a large attendance reported.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Christensen were honored on their 25th anniversary with dinner at an Imperial Cafe, followed by an open house at their home.

Al Carrigan and Lee Dinnel have taken over the Minneapolis and Moline agency for farm equipment and will operate at the Standard Oil Station, south of the tracks. They will continue to operate the service station.
Mrs. A. Person returned last week from Denver where she has spent the winter with her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Barnhardt. We surmise that the fishing season was one of the allurements calling her home.
Mrs. F. W. Olmsted and Mrs. C. Rob’t Carlson drove to Atwood, Kan., Sunday. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Grace Hann who had spent the past week there.
Ten boys have passed the tests and have sent in for applications for their charter and are ready for the scout oath. They include Charles Hanna, Lawrence Philpot, Robert Bradley, Billy Benge, Richard Bradley, Lowell Grimm, Lawrence Burham, Delbert Crowell, Lloyd Redden and Rex Lewis.

The town board should put in a drinking fountain for horses on main street and also a tap free for those wanting water. This should not be neglected any longer.
Mr. A. McManigal and Mr. Eggers went to Imperial last Tuesday where Mr. McManigal made final proof on his homestead.
Mable McCarty stayed with Nellie Nesmith Saturday night and helped color Easter eggs.
Lee, Verl and Clara Kitt, Mable McCarty and the Crosson girls and John took dinner at J. H. Nudings Sunday.

Record temps of 80° over the weekend with about 2 inches of moisture received during the week.
Friends and family helped Otto Bartels celebrate his 100th birthday at an open house last Saturday. He’s seen many changes, experienced life and enjoyed his family. Besides farming, he had a great love of music, learning to play the piano (his favorite), organ, clarinet, saxophone, banjo, violin and the fiddle.
Sunday Lynn and Darlene Haarberg met Jim Baldonado, Megan and Morgan and Ken and Mary Munson in Kearney for brunch to celebrate Mary’s 81st birthday.
Kent and Sharon Buffington attended a dinner theatre at the North Platte Christian Academy where granddaughter Clair Emerson was among students in the play “24-7.” Angi also helped sew the costumes and Barry helped with the program.
Marjorie and Wesley Wheeler attended the Gideon state convention at North Platte Friday and Saturday and also went on an interesting tour of North Platte’s railroad yards.
John and Karla Herrmann of McCook, Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Hanson and girls of Celebration, Fla., and Jaunanna McCormick and son of Denver, Colo., were visitors of Letha Sailors Saturday.
Daryl Miller of Talkeetna, Alaska, is spending a week with his parents, Ray and Ann Miller and with Tom and Sharon Miller.

Palisade residents received devastating news Thursday when they learned the state banking department closed the Frenchman Valley Bank. Efforts had been made to find a buyer for the bank but the three bids made were not acceptable by the FDIC.
Former Wauneta resident Duane Burham, chief design engineer for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was selected as Boss of the Year by the University of Nebraska Office Personnel Association. The Burhams moved to Lincoln in 1967.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gockley observed their 53rd anniversary when Leona’s sisters brought dinner and spent the day. Enjoying the day were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hays of Kearney, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Mues of Arapahoe, Laverne Chapman of Edison and Dennis and Donna Gockley.
Chase Johnson accompanied his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Hofeldt of Denver, Colo., to Salt Lake City, Utah, to visit Barbie Tanton.
Sarah Joy Lucas was baptized Sunday, March 13 at Redeemer Lutheran Church by her father, Rev. James Lucas. Her sponsors are Lloyd and Kathleen Kerchal.
Michelle Vette, an eighth grader at Wauneta, was this year’s County Spelling Contest winner. Kevin Krausnick, an IGS sixth grader, earned runner-up honors.

The wind did blow and the dirt flew Saturday — gusts up to 60 mph were measured.
Bill and Bernice Stock have purchased the Wauneta Clothing Co. from Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lyons of McCook. Mrs. Stock has served as store manager since 1962.
Neil Stock, seventeen-year-old Wauneta High school junior, has been named a recipient of an all-expense paid trip to New York. The tour, known as the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth, is sponsored by the Wauneta IOOF Lodge No. 210 and the Triple Link Rebekah Lodge No. 124.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson and family of Beaver City visited her father, Ed Fanning, and family, and called at the Wendell Polly, Jim Fanning and Della Fanning homes Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sinner were Sunday dinner guests in the Lloyd Sinner home, the occasion was Mrs. Sinner’s birthday. In the afternoon they went to Culbertson to visit Mrs. Sinner’s sister, Mrs. Henry Brehm and family.
Friday overnight to Saturday evening guests in the Frank Fanning home were Ronald Gloy, Chris Hoff and Melvin Legg to help DeWayne celebrate his birthday.

Vernon Hungate, Chas. Grovert, Paul Dragoo and James Johnston went to Denver Friday to take in the National A.A.U. games.
E. R. Voorhees of Hastings was in town Saturday house hunting.
Mr. and Mrs. Jay Person and Mrs. May Walker and Arlene were among those attending the play “Hobgoblin House” put on at the Garfield school Friday evening by the people of that community. The school has recently purchased a lighting system and the play was put on as a means of paying for the plant.
Donald Wheeler, a University Ag College student, was listed in the World Herald as Junior Ak-Sar-Ben winner in horse judging.

The rain Thursday turned into a snow storm during the night and Friday witnessed one of the worst short time snow storms recorded in this section.
The windmill on the Wiley Ranch, Wallace Hartzers and the one on the Sunda place were torn down in the storm last Friday. Will Trembly has all he can do now making new towers.
School closed in Dist. No. 4 Tuesday p.m. with a nice program and a treat for the pupil and popcorn for all. Mesdames McGaughey and daughter, Art Nesmith, Geo. Smith, Chas. Nesmith, Tom and Miss Nerva Downey visited the school in the afternoon.
Johnnie Kitt is putting down a new well for Mrs. Juia Gosney this week.
