Bill Bischoff assumed duties as the new Wauneta Utilities superintendent Monday.
Richard Alan Baxter of Palisade was honored Saturday by dignitaries from across the state at a homecoming in McCook honoring him as the state’s new American Legion Commander.
Hugo and Ann Valdez spent a few days with Joan and Wayne Daniel last week. Ann and Joan have been friends for 43 years.
Charlene Pursley, Leta Brunkhorst, Phyllis Nordhausen and Esther Einspahr attended the Chase County Arts Council program in Imperial Sunday, featuring guitarist David Asbury.
Ruby Anderson, Gerald Bridgman and Ethel Bridgman went to Hastings and Grand Island Friday. They were overnight guests of Ellen Prior in Hastings.
Donna and Clark McMinn spent four days in Kansas City, Mo., attending a 24th Infantry Division reunion.
Visitors of Lucille McBride Thursday were Glen and Elinor Beneda of Lampoc, Calif.
Michelle Rossman, a missionary to Thailand, was a Saturday overnight guest of Mary Emma and Marvin Maris and spoke at the Eden Missionary Church Sunday morning.

Sunday dinner guests of Elmer Lewis to help him celebrate his 95th birthday were Lorene Greeley, Vic and Reva Wicke, Frances and John Lewis, Connie and Duane Barnes and Sable, Bernice and Glen Lewis, Joan and Kenneth Lewis, Brad Lewis and friend Elizabeth, Mrs. Bob Moncrief and Lois and Worth Kanost.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Egle visited Michael Egle at Kearney College over the weekend. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Kerry Krutsinger of Stratton who visited their son. They attended Parents Day activities and Band Day, seeing both the Wauneta and Stratton bands.
Mr. and Mrs. Keenan Kitt, Kyle and Ashley hosted a going-away supper for Sandra Maddux who will be leaving for New Haven, Conn. Guests were Jeff and Laurie Maris, Janet and Rich Keiser and Aaron and Brad and Mindi Dixon and Grant.
Those attending the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Hayes Center and the baptism of Dirk Michael, son of Jerry and Kris Vapenik were Jerry, Kris, Seth and Jess, Kate and Jerry Repass and family, Nan and Rick Malcolm and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Vapenik and Mrs. Leonard Nelms. All were dinner guests of the Jerry Vapeniks.
Leslie and Judd Houser attended the Farm-Aid concert at Lincoln over the weekend with their sister, Lori Collins of Oxford.
Peg McCallum hosted a bridge foursome for the birthdays of Faye Rueter, Emma Hoff and Lucille McBride Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Graves were honored at a dinner at the Palisade American Legion Auxiliary Hall and a reception at the Methodist Church on their 50th anniversary. Over 200 signed the guest book.
Mr. and Mrs. John Kitt were honored on their 50th anniversary with family pictures taken at the family home, followed by an evening dinner at the Mt. Zion Church on Saturday. The family attended church Sunday morning as a group and a reception was held Sunday afternoon at the church.
The Rev. and Mrs. Mason Frazell of Lake Worth, Fla., arrived last Thursday to visit his sister, Mrs. Nellie DeHart, for a week. A family dinner was held Sunday in their honor at the Nellie DeHart home.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wade of Denver spent the weekend in the home of parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Justice.
The Evening Circle of the Methodist WSCS hosted a style show Wednesday to “standing room only.” Modeling sports wear from Jackson’s Department Store were Shelia Greeley, Trudy Gloy, Janet Krausnick, Connie Berry, Bonnie Wicke, Jerolyn and Karrol Kitt, Donna Nordhausen and Jane d’Allemand. Modeling clothing from the Wauneta Clothing Store were Erma Newman, Evelyn Becker, Brenda Owen, Barbara Evans and Carol Marshall.
Val Foster was in Omaha on business last weekend and brought home several girls who were attending school there including Linda Springer, Margie Baldonado, La Donna Brunt and Judy Long. They returned to Omaha Sunday night.

Mr. and Mrs. John Oliver were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Del Oliver and boys.

Mable McCartney helped her aunt, Mrs. Art Nesmith, with housework and cooking for extra men Monday and Tuesday.

Bill Jeffries stepped down as the veterans service officer after 25 years. Duane Todd of Imperial will replace Jeffries.
Firefighters and families were honored during a 9/11 ceremony held at the Palisade school. Blue Star banners were presented to families with husbands, sons and daughters serving in the military. Presentations were made to Lester and Betsy Daniel, Monte and Karleen Cooper, Mick and Joyce Majors, Fred and Nada Krotter, Stephanie Malcolm, Patty Hanken, Richard Alan Baxter and Linda and Tom Moss.
Nell and Everett Terry and daughter, Kathy Nelson, of Lake Placid, Fla., were Saturday morning coffee guests of Delpha Nordhausen.
Beverly Williams of Madrid, Jean Wach, Lana Skelton and Mary Gigax were among the attendees at the Women in Ag seminar in Kearney Wednesday to Friday.
John and Sherrie Oliver of Scottsbluff were Saturday morning visitors of Edna Christensen. They were returning home after attending a Babe Ruth convention in Kansas City.
Bobby Townsend and Anthony and Beverly Dinnel went camping in Wyoming with family over the weekend.

Arlene Large and Lela Hamilton and their mother, Ruby Kennedy, drove to Kennewick, Wash., where they visited Ruby’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McCoy and visited a cousin, Dorothy Bushy and family at Pasco, Wash.
Dwight and Wilma Egle of New Lennox, Ill., is visiting his sister, Virginia Gauger, and also his mother, Ida Egle, who resides at Heritage Home, and other relatives.
Tuesday supper guests of Esther and Frank Novacek were Glen and Edna Christensen and Jim and Bev Oliver of Ontario, Calif.
Alma McBride visited Vearl and Lucille McBride and showed pictures and told of her recent tour to London, England and Scotland with three friends from McCook. Of special interest were the tartan plaids that represent the McBride family.

An estimated 1,300 persons received their final dose of Sabin Oral Vaccine Sunday at the high school auditorium. More than 60 persons, unable to attend Sunday, received their vaccine at Dr. Carlson’s office.
Dale Bischoff was named outstanding Jaycee for the first quarter by the board of directors.
Dewayne Adair who has been stationed in Tennessee in the Navy spent a few days in the Sam Hubbard home and will be leaving for Maryland state.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Maddux attended the Colorado Here-ford Cattle Tour Tuesday to Saturday. Sandra stayed with Dr. and Mrs. Smith and John with Eva Maddux while they were gone.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nord-hausen and Harold and Mrs. Henry Denker went to Kearney Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sutherland and attend the baptismal service for baby Jimmy Jr. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Sutherland also attended.
Eva Widger, Mrs. McCallum and June went to the Imperial Garden Flower Show Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Carrigan of Denver visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Al Carrigan Sunday.

In the sports section of the Lincoln State Journal - a picture of Leonard (Shorty) Gauger, called the “Big Boy of Husker Frosh,” was pictured with frosh coach Ed Weir. Gauger stands 6 feet 5 inches and is one of the biggest men on the squad.
Mrs. Carrie Heitz of Galva, Ill., is visiting her brother, George Schwenk Sr. and other relatives.
Rev. Luther Hegwood and family and his mother, Mrs. Alice Hegwood, took dinner with the Chas. Tatum family Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Arch Counce and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Thompson spent Sunday in Keystone viewing the Keystone project.

Wednesday morning Wauneta firefighters, educators and Vets led Wauneta students in paying tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. Principal Rod Ready spoke to the students and flag window clings were given out to the students.
Doris Ough returned home from a trip to visit her sister, Eunice Grier at Peoria, Ill., then joining a group of 20 people on a trip by plane to New York City for a six-day tour.
Tom and Sharon Miller spent the weekend in Omaha with Bobby and Kari Miller and also attended Nebraska’s football game.
DeLores Taylor, Wilma Egle, Lucille McBride, Beryl Knotwell, and Myra Grimm attended sewing club at the home of Elnora Kitt Friday.
Katie Watt received her white coat at the UN College of Medicine, Division of Physician Assistant Education ceremony on Aug. 28.

Guests of the Jim McKinney family Friday to Sunday were Patsy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Smith of Hastings. Friday after the game guests were the Allberry, Wentz, Steinert and McCrumb families.
A Neighborhood Coffee was given Friday morning for Darena Widger and Cheryl Stretch, new to the area, at the Jean Wach home. Hostesses were Jean, Nancy Wach and Anna Mae Wach.
Wednesday Mr. and Mrs. Dale Blecha and Mr. and Mrs. Don Kennedy travelled to Omaha, meeting Virginia Blecha on Thursday and touring the Henry Doorly Zoo. Friday they visited the S.A.C. Museum and on Saturday attended the Nebraska football game with Shelly Yost.
Rick and Cindy Einspahr went to Colorado Springs where Rick attended insurance meetings and Cindy visited her sister, Vicki Garretson.
Tom and Candy Henning and Cassie of Lincoln visited Ervin and Joan Kitt on Tuesday, going on to Colorado Springs until Sunday. Cassie stayed with her grandparents.

An estimated 1500 people are expected to attend the final phase of a three-part Sabin oral vaccine program Sunday at the Wauneta high school.
Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Hall of Franklin have leased the Krausnick Cafe in downtown Wauneta.
Ron (Pete) Haarberg is opening the Ziegler barbershop.
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Christner and family of Houston, Texas, were guests in the Everett Large home and visited other relatives. They are en route to Thermopolis, Wyo., where they will make their new home.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hanna drove to Ogallala where they met Mrs. Hanna’s father, Dewey Hill, who was returning from Washington where he had attended the World’s Fair and had also visited relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Anderson and Lynn spent ten days in the Wyoming mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson of Boulder met them there on their vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hanna and children visited Mr. and Mrs. Forest Hanna Sunday evening, bringing ice cream and cake in honor of Mrs. Forest Hanna’s birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Nesmith left last week on an extended trip east, expecting to visit New York, Washington D.C., the Virginias, and in fact C.A. said that they will travel until the money is half gone and then start back.

Art Nesmith has the largest straw stack in the neighborhood - 36 ft. long, 18 ft. high and 14 ft. wide.
Mrs. E. G. Crowell and Grandpa Hallet visited on the south divide Sunday.

Wauneta’s valuation topped $13 million. Nearly a half million dollars in new growth was recorded in 2001 - no large development, according to Chase County Assessor Dottie Bartels, mostly smaller improvements.
New teachers at W-P high school include Teresa Hayes, Joyce Gohl, Diane Ready and Rhonda Vetrovsky.
Doris Craig of Fort Morgan, Colo., met Barbara Cooper of Henderson, Nev., and Pat Maynard of Spirit Lake, Idaho, at D.I.A. Thursday of last week. Pat’s plane had been diverted to Casper, Wyo., because of storms. Due to the delay they spent the night with Doris. Diane Widger joined them at a Fort Morgan restaurant for brunch and the ladies came to Wauneta to visit parents, Elsie Becker, Audra Romine and Otto and Ida Bartels.
Arlan and Lynetta Wine, James McNab and Jake Long attended the Nebraska-Troy State game in Lincoln Saturday evening. Arlan joined approximately 200 Nebraska barbershoppers there to sing the National Anthem during the pre-game ceremony before 77,831 fans.
Rod and Joy Wheeler and Tom and Marsha Cameron had Sunday dinner in McCook to observe Marsha’s birthday. They attended the cream can supper at the Hamlet Church before the evening service.
Duane and Beverly Dinnel celebrated their anniversary by attending the State Fair and the Nebraska football game over the weekend.
Laura Keiser of Denver spent Thursday night and Friday with Leta Brunkhorst and visited her uncle, Lorenz Bischoff, at Imperial Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Enrollment at Wauneta Public Schools remained nearly the same as last year, declining only four to 220 students.
Tracy Bellamy joined the WHS teaching staff, instructing 9-12 English and speech and research class, assisting with junior high and high school basketball programs and heading golf in the spring.
Nicholas Cox, son of Maury and Deb Cox of Hamlet, had the rare opportunity to meet four sets of great grandparents including Nathan and Dorothy McNutt of McCook, Elmer and Reva Cox of Hayes Center, Walter and Dorothy Haffner of Hudson, Colo., and James and Alice Parker of Imperial.
Mr. and Mrs. John Howard of Grand Island were Saturday afternoon callers of Pansy Chapman at McCook and Saturday night and Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis.
Peg McCallum hosted three tables of bridge at The Club Friday afternoon following lunch there and later serving ice cream and cake in honor of the August birthdays of Marge Engell, Doris Ough and Fredi Green.
Mrs. Arlene Sukraw of Hershey was a Friday overnight guest of Art and Nina Fortkamp.

School days are in full swing in Wauneta with 356 students, five students down from the 1961-62 year.
The Ken Morgan and Larry Morgan families will be leaving for Bayard where they are negotiating the purchase of the Jack and Jill store there.
Several attended the judging event at the Wayne Smith farm including Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fye and boys, Glenn Fye and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Kline and Tammie.
Mrs. M. E. McBride was honored on her 90th birthday at a no-host dinner in the Bill Buffington home Sept. 2 with immediate relatives attending. On Sept. 3 she was honored at her home with over 70 attending with daughters-in-law Mrs. Bill McBride, Mrs. Charles McBride and Mrs. Vearl McBride serving cake, coffee and punch.
A picnic was held in the Wauneta park Sunday honoring Gary Fortkamp and Tim Timm with family and relatives attending. Gary will be attending seminary in Springfield, Ill., and Tim, Concordia college at Seward.
Mrs. Bob Keating entertained 21 ladies at a coffee Friday morning in honor of her mother, Mrs. Lucille Malone, of Yakima, Wash.

Mrs. Adolf Engel entertained six young ladies Friday evening at dinner honoring her daughter, Emma. The guests were Margaret Emerick, Phyllis Green, Virginia Cox, Florence Turner and Marjorie Gregory.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gerih and family spent Sunday visiting relatives in Eckley, Colo.
Mrs. A. W. Hoff, Mrs. Fred Krausnick, Mrs. J. W. Green and Mrs. Eleanor Frasier left Tuesday for Lincoln to attend the Nebraska State Fair.
Members of the Wauneta high school and grade school faculty and wives held a steak fry out on the Stinking Creek Monday evening.
Thirty footballers opened practice Wednesday, Sept. 1, reporting to Coach C. L. “Red” Grovert. Nine lettermen are back from last year including K. Buffington, D. Kitt, D. Oyer, E. Nordhausen, B. Van Cleave, M. Athey, H. Philpot, B. Kitt and H. Busking.
