Several commendations were made during the annual meeting of the Wauneta Oil Cooperative Company Saturday held at the Legion Hall. Special recognition was given to former manager Richard Greeley and past manager Ted Anderson and recognition in memory of Jim Huser for more than three decades of loyal service, presented to his widow, Jan Huser.
Alan Brown of Ogallala, Annabel Pump, Linda Churda and grandson of Lincoln, Margaret Greeley and Delpha Nordhausen flew to Spokane, Wash., visiting in the home of Ray and Ailene Brown. Joining them were Marlene Gardner of Salem, Ore., and Nell and Everett Terry of Placid, Fla.
Gene Haarberg of Imperial was awarded the Nebraska Distinguished Service Award in agriculture at the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts legislative conference in Kearney Sept. 25.
Family, sisters and friends helped Gene and Wilva Harchelroad observe their 50th anniversary Saturday, evening Oct. 7 at a dinner held at the Copper Mill in McCook.
Lucille and Tom Klima and Sheila and Dennis Pfeiffer were Sunday dinner guests of Darrel and Sharla Klima, Matt, Marc and Brett to help Matt celebrate his birthday.
Elaine Skiles of McCook and Letha Sailors enplaned from Omaha to Boston a week ago Sunday and toured the historical sights there, travelling on to New York City and Maine.
Russel and Elizabeth Schmidt and family of Wichita, Kan., Charles Christner of Garden City, Kan., and Steve and Vicki Christner and family helped Bill and Charlotte Christner observe their 40th anniversary Sunday.

An information luncheon was held Wednesday at the Legion Hall on the possibility of establishing a nutrition site in Wauneta.
Trent Minneman was one of two Nebraska 4-Hers selected to attend the inaugural conference at the National 4-H Center, Washington D.C. on Oct. 13-15.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Noble and sons visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earvin Noble at Albion. While there observed Cody’s second birthday (Oct. 20) and the 80th birthday of his Grandpa Williams (Oct. 21).
Don and Bonnie (Crosson) Majors were honored as a Nebraska Pioneer Farm family and presented an engraved plaque and framed certificate at the Dundy County Fair in August as one of the families who have owned the same farm in Nebraska for 100 years or more. The Crosson-Majors homestead was acquired in 1885.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Orval Hamilton had supper in Imperial Saturday night in honor of Orval’s birthday on the 18th and Lela’s on the 20th.
Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Bley left for Oklahoma Oct. 1 to visit their children, returning on the 17th.

Thirteen Wauneta Scouts took first place at the Camporee at Oak Canyon, 25 miles southwest of Culbertson.Placings were based on points for scouting skills. Scouts included Larry Kitt, Orville Erickson, Raymond Lines, Mike Ough, Dick Buffington, Gerald Legg, Jack Legg, Eddie Arenz, Neil Christensen, Marlus Prior, John Kitt, Raymond Gunderson and Douglas McCallum. Fred Heldenbrand is scoutmaster and Larry Morgan, assistant. Junior Ough sponsored the kids on the trip.
The FFA Slave Auction was a success with 34 slaves sold for a total of $277, for an average of $8.26 each. Royce Bernard was the high individual, being sold to Dick Nordhausen.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brunkhorst, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brunkhorst and Mrs. Herb Busking and Joyce drove to Athol, Kan., to attend the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kuhlman.
Mrs. Walter Keating, Mrs. Stanton Troutman, Mrs. I.O. Premer and Mrs. I.P. Lamb attended the Flower Show School No. 4 at Benkelman.
Mrs. Frank Novacek, Mrs.Glen Christensen and Mrs. Grace Oliver returned home Tuesday from a visit with a niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Howie and family at West Lafayette, Ind.

Mrs. Sam Rowley invited a few ladies to finish up her butterfly quilt. All had a nice time and a nice dinner was served at noon.
A party was given at the Steve Hayward home Friday night in honor of Madelyn and Ethel for the young people. Thirty-two young folks were present and the evening was spent playing games.
Little Miss Ethel Zarecor entertained several of her little friends on her seventh birthday last Thursday. A birthday cake and games were features of the party.
August Denker is having his house painted.
Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Goltl and Marlys, Kenneth McGooden and Wm. Hoback of Hayes Center left Monday forenoon for Denver to attend a meeting of Ford dealers.

Will and Johnnie Kitt, Wallace Hartzer and Will Holderly left Monday for Canada. They took the train at Stratton.
Miss Greta Grosbach is teaching the Hanna school for a month for Miss Gladys Harvey.
Miss Jennie Frazell went to Lincoln Monday to attend the Rebekah assembly as a delegate from the Wauneta lodge.
R.H. Williams left on Monday to attend the grand lodge I.O.O.F. in Lincoln.
The chicken thieves are abroad. They took from 6 to 10 one night last week. Better watch out for the thief. |

Eric Padilla and Ashli Grimes were crowned king and queen at the 2000 WPHS homecoming. Second attendants were Jeff Steckman and Larissa Ward and Clinton Barger and Sarah Harrison were first attendants. Crown bearers were Emily Johnston and Logan Bischoff.
Audra Romine, Verna Sandman and Virginia Gauger, members of the Eden Sunshine Club, were lunch guests of Jean Hardy in McCook Thursday.
Cliff and Margie Shackelford returned home after spending ten days in Virginia with Lon and Joan Shackelford and Kirsten at Charlottesville and with Margie’s granddaughter, Tara, and Dave Daly in Richmond.
Bev and Harold Maris spent Wednesday to Sunday in Omaha attending his army reunion. About 100 men, wives and other family members met at the Best Western Regency.
Renelle and Barry Mooney and Rylee spent Friday night with Loyd and Karen Christner and attended the Wauneta-Palisade football game.

Heidi Maxfield showed slides and spoke on her trip to Youth Congress ’85 which she attended with several area youth in Washington D.C. Her presentation followed a carry-in dinner at the Methodist Church Sunday.
Viola and Elwyn Krausnick were Sunday dinner guests in the home of Janet and Dennis Egle. Afternoon visitors for cake and ice cream in honor of Viola’s Monday birthday were Floyd and Delpha Nordhausen, Kenneth and Mervin Krausnick and Kevin and Fred and Betty Krausnick and Todd.
Mr. and Mrs. Milo Spaulding were Monday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Don Kennedy. The Spauldings were celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary.
Melissa Jo, daughter of Jim and Annette Long, was baptized at worship services at Redeemer Lutheran Church Sunday. Dinner guests of the Longs following the service were grandparents Donnie and Viola Castens and Violet and Wendell Long and about 20 friends and other relatives.
Visitors of Beth Harchelroad at Heritage Saturday were June McCallum, Elsie Counce, Ruby Jones, Dorothy Baumfalk, Bernice Hohl and Ruby Anderson, taking cookies and enjoying a visit in honor of Beth’s 87th birthday on the 14th and Nellie DeHart who had joined the group and would celebrate her 98th birthday on the 15th.
Glenn and Ora Ruettimann accompanied Ed, Jo and Courtney Arenz to Denver Saturday to meet Jami Arenz who was returning from a three-week trip to Cairnes, Brisbone and Sidney, Australia and other points of interest, accompanied by her grandmother, Esther Arenz, of Pasadena, Calif.
Julie Maris and friend Dan were weekend guests in the Leland Maris home. She came to surprise her brother, Michael, and to attend the Stratton High School homecoming festivities where Michael was crowned king. Others from the Eden Community as part of the homecoming royalty were Michael Egle, junior class attendant and Jasen Littrel, freshman attendant.

The Palisade Soil and Water Conservation District chose Mr. and Mrs. Jason Christner as the 1960 honor family. An aerial color picture was awarded to Mr. Christner at the convention held in Fremont.
Mrs. Minnie Christner celebrated her 85th birthday Sunday with all her children present. The group attended church together, followed by a dinner in the home of Mrs. Eva Stinnette with over 25 present. Birthday cake and coffee were served to many guests in Mrs. Christner’s home that afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Huser, Mr. and Mrs. John Simon and boys and Mary Handel and Kenneth Handel, both of McCook, were at the Paul Meints home to help Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Handel of McCook celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Arenz and family spent the weekend in Denver as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smukler and family.

Sixty friends and neighbors surprised Harry Colson by gathering at his home Wednesday evening for an ice cream supper.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nordhausen and Viola were McCook visitors Thursday and Mrs. Lee Kitt and daughter Phyllis were McCook visitors Saturday.

Our school board is thinking of putting in the 4th teacher. The people are with them and it should be done by all means.
G. W. Fielding brought us in a Yucca stem of flowers in full bloom Saturday. They never were known to bloom so late in the season before.
The band was reorganized Wednesday evening.
If the weather clerk doesn’t mind, he may open the valves and drop down a little moisture.

Bernard O’Neil observed his 90th birthday with his four daughters, Kay Long, Margaret Phillips, Jan Cribelli and Carol Kobel. His life was spent in Southwest Nebraska in the Garfield Community on Wauneta’s North Divide where he farmed and ranched. He now resides at the Sunset Manor in Brush, Colo.
Iris Nelson of Grants Pass, Ore., Betty Carey and Lylas Hudson were met for lunch at the Senior Center by former teacher friends of Iris who were Nina Fortkamp, Lois Wine, Jan Cribelli, Gary and Jan DeWester, Marge Hanna, Ila Widger and Doris Ough.
Marilyn Walker of Ogallala and DeLores Taylor went on the Shorties Tour to Branson, Mo., Monday evening, returning on Saturday.
Patricia Hackert spent Thursday and Friday in Lincoln with her daughter, Rita Scott, and attended the Holy Heart Cathedral of the Risen Christ in preparation for the Pilgrimage to Rome.
Tucker Boos was baptized Sunday by Pastor Wellman at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Marty and Crystal Yearous were his sponsors. A dinner followed the service in the home of his grandparents, Judi and Allan Nordhausen.
Kirk and Cindy Sandman spent the weekend in Huron, S.D., with Ane and Tami Sandman, attending parents night and homecoming activities.

Ron and Orla Kitt of Ogallala hosted a birthday dinner Sunday at their home for her mother, Marilyn Walker. Guests were L. E. and Clyde Walker, Helen Rousey and Jessie and Ellie Heldenbrand of Wauneta.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Maris showed pictures of their tour of Ecuador at the Stratton Community Club meeting Thursday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Gockley and family had coffee with the Keith Buffingtons Friday after Wauneta’s game.
Royalty was announced during homecoming activities Friday. Crowned king and queen were Mark Decker and Shelly DeWester. First attendants were Kris Polly and Heidi Maxfield. Second attendants were Kevin Lambert and Marci McBride. Crownbearers were Aaron McKinney and Beth Kitt.

Five generations were represented at a gathering in Wauneta. Present were grandmother Phyliss Harms, mother of Danny Edgington Joan (Harms) Edgington, great grandmother Ruth Louch and great great grandmother Edith Trembley.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tatum observed their 57th wedding anniversary on Oct. 3. Guests for cake and ice cream to help them celebrate were Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lorance, Mr and Mrs. Elmer Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Harrison and girls and Mr. and Mr. Don Harrison and children.
The Blanche 4-H Club and their families attended the Ice Follies in Denver Saturday afternoon. Families going on the trip were: Chester Kuskies, Elvin Webers, R. L. Gloys, Frank Fannings, Woodrow Moodys and Tommy Madduxes.
Kent Buffington and three other boys attended an FFA banquet in Omaha Sunday where they received the plaque awarded the Wauneta chapter.
Charley Johnson left Sunday for Fremont to attend the soil conservation meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Jason Christner will receive an award at this meeting for the work done in soil conservation.

The first frost of the season came Friday night, Sept. 27. No damage reported to crops.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week all the grade children in the county had the physical examination which is required by law.
G. J. Hancock and wife returned Saturday from St. Louis where they had attended the American Legion convention.
A number of friends surprised Mrs. A. Person, the occasion being her birthday, with a handkerchief shower Tuesday afternoon, followed by a dainty lunch.
Not exactly a gasoline war, but a movement to stop certain dealers from rebating on gasoline sales regardless of the quantity purchased, has caused gasoline to drop from 20.8¢ to 16¢ in Wauneta.

Homer Grosbach left for Washington D.C. where he has secured a position with the government as an assistant engineer in the geographical survey. Success to him.

A wet snow began falling Saturday, on into Sunday, measuring 7 inches north to 2 1/2 inches south of town making this the earliest snowfall on record. Prior to this the earliest recorded snowfall was received on Sept. 29, 1985 when 5 inches was recorded.
The new field lights at Wauneta-Palisade Bronco field went up earlier in the week with SWPPD in charge of the project, assisted by Wauneta village employees.
Clinton Barger was among 34,000 students named as Commended Students in the 2001 National Merit Scholastic Program, placing in the top five percent of more than one million students in the program.
Mary Vette of Fort Wayne, Ind., spent last week with Chuck and Betty Vette. Thursday supper guests to help Chuck celebrate his birthday were Heath and Michelle Seeker, Bob and Crystal Vette and Katrina Nolan.
Sharon Travis called on Lucille McBride, Audra Romine and Ila Widger Sunday evening, taking bouquets of roses from her garden before Sunday night’s freeze.

A new kindergarten schedule is being tried this year. Half of the 23 youngsters go all day Monday and Wednesday with the other half going on Tuesday and Thursday with the whole group together on Friday.
Pastor Lisle Mewmaw was recognized for 50 years of service as a minister at Sunday’s service with special music sung in his honor and a pin presented by his wife.
Richard Fanning of Goodland, Kan., was a Wednesday supper guest of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Novacek. The Novaceks spent the weekend with Jim and Wanda Novacek in Scottsbluff and attended the dedication service of Joshua, son of Mr. and Mrs Jack Novacek, at the Bethel Baptist Church.
Marian Gibb and Alma Taylor of Helena, Mont., visited from Thursday to Monday in the Junior and Margie Kitt home. They all visited and were dinner guests of Paul and Elnora Kitt and Joan and Ervin Kitt while here.
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hoff and Mr. and Mrs. Vearl McBride ate out on the 24th in honor of the ladies’ Wednesday birthdays, playing cards later in the Hoff home.

Bill Kennedy, leader of the Elmer 4-H Club and Gary Gibbons, member of the 4-H club, won a state 4-H trip to Waterloo, Ia., to attend the national dairy Club Congress in October. They plan to go on a chartered bus leaving Lincoln on Oct. 4. This is the first time that Hayes County has had a winner to the Dairy Club Congress.
The Colorado State College Band at Greeley, Colo., will play at the football game Sunday which will be televised on ABC. Norma Gockley and Janice O’Neil are members of the band.
A few ladies surprised Mrs. Paul Applegarth Saturday in honor of her birthday. Guests included Esther McFadden, Thelma Harris, Carol Wolcott, Mrs. Harold Moon, Mrs. Burdette Melchert and Mrs. Jack Hahn.
Friday evening guests in the Don Egle home for a fish fry were Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Carpenter and Mrs. Martha Egle. Mrs. Martha Egle also spent the weekend.
Mrs. Forest Hanna, Mrs. Dean Mitchell and Mrs. Frank Clements of Imperial were Chase County delegates to the annual meeting of the Nebraska Home Extension Clubs held in McCook.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Anderson and Cleve entertained at dinner Thursday evening honoring Mr. and Mrs. Bill Roschewski on their wedding anniversary. Other guests were Wayne and Danny Roschewski, Elaine Anderson and Harold Roschewski.

Mrs. Fred Grimm and Mrs. W. C. Higley were entertained Thursday in Palisade honoring a girlhood friend of the ladies who recently returned from Washington D.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Thompson spent Sunday at Sutherland.
Bill McBride drove to Denver Tuesday. His sister, Mrs. Archie Redfield and children, will accompany him home.
The pupils at Hillcrest will have their physical tests at Wauneta Wednesday forenoon. In the afternoon they will enjoy a treat of ice cream and cake prepared by their mothers.

Stratton has voted to put in water works.
