Construction is well underway for the new BWTelcom building and installation of over 90 miles of new fiber optic line in Chase and Dundy counties.
Bill and Judy McBride of Bruneau, Idaho, are houseguests of his sister, Barbara, and Kenny Smith. They also visited with Lucille McBride and Leta Brunkhorst.
Edith and Reinhold Gloy attended her 1932 class reunion at the alumni banquet Saturday evening at the Grant school. Seven of the nine living class members were present.
Tom and Linda Moss returned from attending Tom’s first ship’s reunion in Evansville, Ind. In 1968 Tom left the USS Farragut and hadn’t seen any of the crew since.
Richard Christensen of Gaithersburg, Md., and his son, James of Silver Springs, Md., spent a few days last week with Edna Christensen.
Elsie Becker, Phyllis Nordhausen and Gladys Schneider attended the Steinbeck-Bernard reunion at Benkelman Sunday.
Leona Littlejohn accompanied her son, Leonard, to her Buethe family reunion held at the North Shore Lodge at Ogallala’s Lake McConaughy Sunday.

The firemen literally raised the roof on the fire hall over the weekend to make room for a new meeting room. Using a crane and hydraulic jacks, the roof was raised approximately 6 feet to install new sidewalls.
Leland DeHart received the Browning-Shafer award from the Imperial Eagle’s during a firemen’s appreciation supper held at the Eagle’s Sunday for his many years of service to Wauneta as a fireman and as a charter member of the Wauneta Rescue Squad.
Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Long, Marvin and Mary Emma Maris, Roger and Beth Maris and Erica attended a surprise birthday supper in the home of Jim and Annette long and girls Friday, especially for Violet Long’s birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Christensen visited the Neil Christensen family in Lincoln the weekend of the 7th and attended Army Reserve graduation exercises for grandson Karl at Ashland. On Sunday they went to Syracuse to tour the new Army Reserve building.
The Steve Noble family were in Albion over the weekend to help Steve’s grandparents, John and Wilma Williams, celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Most adults scoffed at the prospects of Wauneta’s kids using the swimming pool during the opening weekend - “Just too darn cold!” The kids didn’t agree as nearly 400 doned their suits and enjoyed the pool.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown of Hamlet were honored on their golden anniversary at an open house with about 300 signing the guest book.
Mrs. Junior Kitt and Mrs. Henry Wicke took Karrol and Jerolyn Kitt, Patty Gauger, Mary Ann Fortkamp and Lloyd Wicke to 4-H Camp at Halsey Monday.
Mrs. Gilbert Nordhausen and Mrs. Dale Krausnick took Marilyn Rietsch, Lois Bartels, Alyce Wilson, Vicki Nordhausen and Dianna Krausnick to the 4-H camp at Curtis. Also attending camp were Kathleen McCallum, Carol Sue O’Neil, Marla Prior, Cindy Sandman, Jerry Ruth Arenz and Jackie and Janice Sandman.
The Bill Buffingtons entertained the Emerson Schwenks, Dennis Gockley, the Vearl McBrides and Lynn Monday evening at a steak fry out of doors.
Mrs. Dick Nordhausen, Mrs. Minnie Denker, Mrs. Bill Denker, Mrs. Sophie Nordhausen, Mrs. Bill Keiser and Laura were coffee guests Thursday afternoon of Mrs. Vernon Shoemaker in Palisade.
Extension club members toured homes during the homes tour on June 15 with 65 members attending. Homes toured were Dick Nordhausen, William Haarberg and Gerald Usher all of Wauneta and Les Smith and Vic Cole of Imperial.

The worst storm of the season to hit Wauneta with walnut size hail coming down at a terrific speed for only a short time followed by rain falling in torrents. Water came down the canyons filling basements in the west part of town and leaving homes standing in a lake of water. Water on mainstreet was running runningboard deep.
Sunday—Fried chicken dinner 40¢ and roast beef dinner 35¢ at Falls Hotel.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lorance and daughter Margie and Ethel Hayward spent Thursday at the Kenneth Kitt home.
Mrs. F. C. Haarberg entertained Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Walling and their families at dinner Friday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Walling’s silver anniversary. The occasion was also the celebration of birthdays of Mrs. Walling, Mrs. Haarberg, Mrs. Willard Gross and Ward Walling Jr. which all fell on the same day.

The 21st annual celebration of Palisade’s Pioneer Days was held over the weekend. Dennis and Shirley Ferguson were named the grand marshals. The new Veterans Memorial Monument was partially erected for the celebration.
In 1902 a group of people gathered to form the Pioneer Church of the Brethren. On June 22-23 a 100-year celebration was observed, the present church being the old grade school.
Erma Kitt observed her 90th birthday this year. She and husband Kenneth Kitt celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1983. Erma recalled hard times but family, friends and neighbors banded together to help each other. Music is a big part of her life.
Tony Cribelli and Ted Grimm participated in the torch run on its way through Wauneta.
Delpha Nordhausen, Phyllis Nordhausen, Nola and Harry Straub, Ray and Donna Swanson, Lucille McBride and Pastor Mike Laing were among those attending the hymn sing at the Church of Christ in Palisade.
A group of 32 ladies met at the Senior Center Thursday for coffee and rolls, hosted by Doris Ough and Ethel Louch on Bonnie Hanna’s birthday. Other June birthdays were June Cox, Marge Hanna and Violet Long.
Jack and Carol Maddux spent May 29 to June 3 at North Branford, Conn., visiting daughter Sandra and Colin Conklin, Rebecca and Luke.
Neldon and Linda Hewitt of Washington are houseguests of the Kent Buffingtons.
Wesley Wheeler and Rod and Joy Wheeler went to Onset, Mass., to visit Harry and Val Jean Soper and to attend their 50th anniversary celebration.

The community of Palisade will celebrate its centennial this weekend in conjunction with their annual Pioneer Days with activities planned throughout the weekend.
The Palisade swimming pool opened Saturday with 95 registering.
Belle and Beth Frasier returned Saturday from a week’s vacation which included an all-expense paid cruise for two aboard the Sunward II to the Bahamas. Belle won the cruise through the Diet Coke Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Roschewski of Lompoc, Calif., were visitors of Bill and Hilda Roschewski last week.
Marty and Pam Fye and Cassandra of Lakewood, Colo., were Friday to Monday guests of Bea and Bob Fye.
The Gary DeWesters took daughter Teresa and Lori Buffington to join a bus of young people, originating in Scottsbluff, on a trip to Liberty, Mo., to attend a Co-op Leadership Camp Monday to Friday.
Jeff and Kay Maxfield, Todd and Eric of Taylorville, Ind., spent the weekend with his parents, Bette and Raymond Maxfield. They were joined by the Jim Maxfield family, Merrill and Emma Jean Maris and Edna Maxfield at a picnic at the lake Sunday evening.

Wauneta is going to have a new dial telephone system, according to Robert Bradley of the Wauneta Telephone Company, Inc. Plans are to have the system installed and operational by June 1, 1963.
Cecil Steckman was elected to his second term on the grade school board and Jack Sandman was named to fill the vacancy left by Harlan Stock.
Mrs. A. E. Carrigan was surprised with a “welcome” party at her home Tuesday afternoon with 14 ladies present. Cake and coffee were enjoyed and the afternoon spent socially.
Gary Gibbons, Brice Rueter and Bonnie Wicke left Monday to attend the annual 4-H Club Work Week at the Kellogg Center in Lincoln.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Thomas of San Diego, Calif., spent about a week here visiting in the Myron Williams and Jim Thomas homes.

The Mt. Zion M. E. Church is undergoing a complete overhauling, new walls of Nu-wood plank and ceiling of In-cel-wood, and the wood trimming on the exterior getting new paint.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McCallum and June were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Kitt and Josephine.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dudek Sr. entertained Mr. and Mrs. Ray Keech and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Follette and family of Palisade at a chicken dinner Sunday.
Clyde Brown of Enders did some plumbing work for Elmer Pribbeno Friday and Saturday. He is making his farm home strickly modern.
Mr. and Mrs. Ennis Decker left Friday for Chadron where Mr. Decker will attend the summer session at Chadron State Normal.

Don and Jackie Kennedy were honored on their 50th anniversary by their children and grandchildren at an open house held at the Wauneta Legion Hall.
The children of Leona Gockley hosted a 90th birthday celebration at Cox’s Pond near Champion over the weekend with over 50 guests enjoying visiting, fishing, swimming and paddle boating at Champion Lake.
Les and Jan Houser and Richard Bardsley were among 12 Frenchman Valley Riders going on a Sunday run, first having breakfast at Imperial’s 12th Street Cafe, attending church in Holyoke, Colo., eating dinner in Sterling, Colo., on to Cabella’s at Sidney, then home.
Bill Jeffries and Beulah DeHart attended the 60th anniversary observance of Gervouse and Elinor Aarons in North Platte. He ran the co-op store in Wauneta 50 years ago.
Jane Dinnel returned home from a two week tour in Michigan with the singing group, “Voices of Praise.”
Coffee guests of Lois and Marlin Wine Wednesday morning were Mike and Sylvia Eagan of Portland, Ore.
Loyd and Karen Christner attended the Nebraska Department of Am-Vets in Grand Island over the weekend. Loyd was elected 2nd state vice president and Karen, 1st vice president.

Work began on the gym floor with concrete being taken up, relocating water pipes that were under the concrete, then pouring a new concrete slab and laying on a new wood floor.
Doug Terry and Brenda Lacy were chosen to participate in the Junior Law Cadet program, sponsored by the Wauneta American Legion.
Four members of the Eden Sunshine Club, Jean Hardy, Virginia Gauger, Lorene Brunkhorst and Verna Sandman spent Wednesday in McCook where they ate at Mexican Lingo, visited the museum, the Country Boutique, a greenhouse and a trailer sales business.
Members of the Methodist choir, their director Mike Kitt and accompanist Peg Walgren were guests of Joan and John Green Wednesday evening to view a video tape of the choir’s presentation of the contata, “The Overcomers,” which they presented May 22. The group enjoyed tea and cake on their patio.
Herb and Eulene Busking and Floyd and Delpha Nordhausen ate at the Palisade Cafe Saturday night, celebrating both couples’ anniversaries.
Cindy Sandman, Seri, Ane, Tami and Andrew and Cindy’s mother, Ruth Madron, flew to Boise, Idaho, where they visited Donnalee Kindler and attended Greg Kindler’s graduation, then were met in Denver by Kirk and Derek where they attended the graduation of Jennifer, daughter of Cindy’s sister, Jane, and Gene Svendsen.
Peg McCallum spent a week at Randolph-Macon Women’s College at Lynchberg, Va., where she participated in their Elder Hostel program, attending classes for five days, completing three courses. She had attended college there following high school.

The first phase of the polio immunization program using oral vaccine will be held at the high school gym on June 17, second phase on July 29 and the last on Sept. 2. Residents are asked to send a post card to their family doctor indicating the number of persons who will attend the first program.
200 people attended the alumni banquet Friday evening at the high school auditorium, honoring classes with “2”. Class of 1912 had no representatives, 1922 had two; 1932 had five; 1942 had 12; 1952 had 12 and 1962 had eight.
Don Harvey and Woodrow Moody were elected to 3-year terms on the Wauneta Rural High School board.
Twenty-five year veteran Byron H. Lady, son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Lady of Palisade, was promoted to senior master sergeant in the United States Air Force.
Last Sunday evening a surprise housewarming was held in the Don Denker home with 11 couples present. Cards were played for entertainment.
Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Hoff and family spent Memorial Day at Lake McConaughy.
Dennis Kennedy attended the 4-H Junior Leaders conference in Curtis Thursday and Friday.

Keith McCallum and Ty Colbert drove home Sunday from Denver. Ty returned to Denver but Keith remained and will resume his duties with Dr. Rider at the new Chateau Theatre on its completion.
Arch L. Counce, Ray Scrivens and Frank Counce Jr. went on a fishing trip to Beacon Lake, north of Ogallala, catching their limit.
The dance given last Thursday evening at the Legion Hall by Henry Wicke and his new bride, the former Leah Sandman, drew a large number of well wishers.
Miss Joyce Novacek spent Saturday night with Miss Evelyn Hoff.

More than 200 alumni and guests attended the celebrations and the banquet over Memorial Day weekend. Edna Christensen and Erma Kitt were present for the Class of ’32; Class of ’42 had 13 of 38 members present; Class of ’52: 23 of 40; Class of ’62: 19 of 34; Class of ’72: 14 of 29; Class of ’82: 6 of 27; Class of ’92: 11 of 26; Class of ’02: 1 of 20.
Palisade and Wauneta-Palisade teachers Tom Moss and Tom Monnahan retire as the school year ends. Moss began his career at Palisade High School in 1972 as the science teacher, moving on to Wauneta-Palisade schools with the merger. Monnahan began his teaching career in 1967 at Palisade, teaching math.
Industrial Arts fair winners: Shelby Anderson, Outstanding Project and People’s Choice award for bathroom sink and cabinet and Instructor’s Choice for corner cupboard; Kallan Kitt, first place Outstanding Construction for a wrap-around counter; Ryan McCrumb, second place outstanding project for a bookcase cabinet and Emily Humphrey, second place Outstanding Construction for a vanity dresser and stool.
Floyd and Lela Fortkamp of Santa Rosa, Calif., were guests of Violet Long Memorial weekend and visited relatives.
Lloyd and Chris Bley were in Middleburg, Pa., over the weekend to attend the high school graduation of Christina Bley. Lloyd gave the prayer at baccalaureate services at Penn’s Creek Bible School on Sunday with graduation on Monday.
Jeralyn Wine and Karen Baker were in Omaha over the weekend where Jeralyn participated in the Creighton University special olympics in two swimming events and one running event.

Many WHS alumni took part in weekend festivities. Beulah Hahn Olmsted was present for the class of 1917. The Class of ’27 had 8 members present; Class of ’37, 12 present; Class of ’47: 9 present; Class of ’57: 19 present; Class of ’67: 12 present; Class of ’77: 15.
Members of Kid Kangaroo Pre-School and their families and teacher, Bobbi Hefley, had a picnic at the park Thursday to finish up their school year.
Seniors of W.H.S. went to Denver, Colo., Wednesday, flying to Dallas, Texas, for their senior trip following graduation.
Henry and Eleanor Petr were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with friends, neighbors and relatives gathering at the Legion Hall for a supper and dance.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bley attended an army reunion of 2nd Battalion Headquarters Company 193 at St. Louis, Mo. This was the first reunion in 42 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Gloy attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knight in Ogallala Saturday and were barbecue guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gloy and girls.
Teresa DeWester won the gold medal in the Class D long jump competition at the state track meet, jumping 16’11.5”. Five others qualified including Rod Haarberg in the shot and discus; Doug Terry in the pole vault; Shana Wilson in the 300 hurdles; Angi Buffington in the 100 and Derek Andrews in the high jump.

Mr. and Mrs. Verne Fisher are attending the World’s Fair at Seattle, Wash.
Mrs. Carl Widger and LaVerna Fanning left Thursday for a vacation through the Black Hills, visiting Glen Widger in Montana and then attending the World’s Fair in Seattle.
Second Lt. Jonas F. Crapson spent the weekend in the home of his mother, Mrs. Ed Fanning. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Fanning, Second Lt. Crapson and Jim Crapson were Saturday supper guests in the Bill Crapson home.

Work on the new Crystal Theatre is progressing rapidly with the black glass on the front now on.
A little surprise was sprung on the Wilfred Maddux family at their ranch Sunday in commemoration of their 10th anniversary. Four generations were present.
Glen Athey left for Hastings Tuesday where he will resume work on the Tri-county project.
Mrs. Glen Athey accompanied Mrs. Eleanor Frasier to Chicago. Mrs. Athey will spend several weeks visiting friends and relatives in Chicago and Wisconsin.
Guy Sims and his mother, Mrs. Alice Sims, returned from an extended trip through Florida, Texas and Washington D.C. Saturday. Jerry Von Stade accompanied them.
Mrs. Tom Stinnette visited her sister, Mrs. Cleo Fanning, Thursday.

We haven’t seen those hitching racks and scales moving yet.
A number of the town men folks were out to the cemetery Tuesday and fixed it up. Those who went deserve credit for so doing.
A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Clara and Gordon Burham Wednesday evening by the young people of our pretty little village.
Mable McCarty stayed over Sun. night with Mrs. Olive Selby for company as Carl got home quite late from Stratton.
