Pat Madden resigned as Village Utilities Superintendent due to health complications resulting from the Oct. 14, 1998, cave-in accident. He has been employed by the village the past 17 years, 10 and a half as utilities superintendent.
Guy Rundback tendered his resignation on the WP school board. The board includes Rick Einspahr, president; Beth Padilla, vice president; Kelly Egle, treasurer and Jon Anderjaska, secretary. Stuart Bartels was sworn in as a new member.
Rogan Einspahr was named the first recipient of the Winona Hollembeak Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship. The fire department also presented $250 checks to Cub Master Bill Bischoff and Scout Master Brian Harchelroad for scout projects.
Jim and Annette Long and girls met her family in McCook Sunday for dinner to observe their 20th anniversary. Family included Donnie and Viola Castens, Allen and Roxanne Castens and family and Cory Castens and Cole.
Mary and Matt Smith, Gabriel, Virgil, Jacob and Jackson and Sandra and Colin Conklin, Rebecca and Luke were guests of the ladies’ parents, Jack and Carol Maddux.
Ruby Anderson attended the David Robinson concert at the CFO Church Sunday with Virgil and Edie Sandman and later was a dinner guest in their home.

Opal Kerchal observed her 90th birthday on Jan. 1. She was a guest of honor at a cooperative dinner held at Redeemer church, hosted by her six children: Eva Polly, Leonard Kerchal, Virgil Kerchal, Keith Kerchal, Ramona Nordhausen and Joan Vicary and families.
Florence West was honored on her 90th birthday at a reception held at the Palisade Methodist Church, hosted by her children: Lois May, Melba Richter, Arwyn West, Rawleyce Rife, Mary Ellen Dahnke and Ronnie West. There were over 200 present. A special gift was a quilt with the hand prints of her 40 great grandchildren appliqued on blocks with their names embroidered on them.
The Dave Carpenter family were New Year’s guests of the Keith Buffington family. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Buffington were Sunday evening visitors. Matt Buffington returned to O.R.U. on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Roschewski and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Roschewski drove to Beatrice on Dec. 23 and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Roschewski. Wayne and Elaine spent Christmas Eve in Lincoln with Melanie Roschewski, Sherry Nichols and Theron, returning to Beatrice Christmas Day to have dinner with Hazel Sandersfeld and her families.
Mr. and Mrs. David Wheeler and family of Yukon, Okla., spent a few days with parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Wheeler. Joining them on the 30th were the Dennis and Rod Wheeler families.

Winter and 1960 came in together as six to eight inches of wet snow fell during the night. By midmorning more snow, accompanied by high winds, began to fall. Visibility was poor as many travelers began “jamming” into Wauneta with the Plains Cafe as the main “guest placement center,” with everyone stranded given accommodations.
Joe Rietsch has been named as the winner of the Regent’s Scholarship at the University of Nebraska. A total of 306 scholarships were given and Joe ranked among the upper third of winners.
Chester Graves and brother accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Graves to North Platte Sunday night and left by train for their home in Salem, Ore., after spending two weeks with parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Graves and other relatives.
Frank Crapson of White Sands, N.M., Bill, Jane and Jim Crapson were Monday evening visitors in the Alfred Wach home.
Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Weber and girls, Mr. and Mrs. George Whitman, Frances Harris and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith enjoyed a waffle supper at the Howard Gibbons home Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Walter Wheeler and Mr. and Mrs. Averill Hudnall and family of Imperial returned home after spending the past ten days in the V. E. Crawford home at Corpus Christi, Texas. They enjoyed Christmas dinner in the Crawfordhome, fishing in the gulf and a fish fry in the home of Mrs. Wheeler’s grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Marloe Ripper.

January 2, 1935
By a mere 11 votes more than the necessary two-thirds majority, the people of Wauneta voted yes in have the new bridge built in east Wauneta. The turnout was light with only 176 votes cast.
Twenty-five neighbors and friends dropped in at the Frank Lee home last Saturday evening to remind them of their 25th wedding anniversary. Pinochle was the diversion of the evening and concluded with a delicious lunch.
Mrs. Floyd Holland and son returned to their home in Greeley after spending the holidays with grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Allen.
Russell Polly and Urcell McCartney went to McCook Monday to try out for the Kuker California Night Hawks orchestra. The boys were successful and left the same night for Omaha to play an engagement.
Miss Phyllis Green entertained eight girls at a pinochle party Saturday afternoon. After lunch late in the afternoon the affair turned into a theater party at the Crystal.

Hamlet residents voiced their concerns on plans for placing a branch of the Palisade Elevator’s new fertilizer plant in Hamlet and the plans were then terminated, according to elevator manager Cathy Humphrey.
Craig Kitt and Paula Kitt, both of New York City and Ryan Busking of Norman, Okla., spent the Christmas holidays with Paul and Elnora Kitt. All were Christmas guests of Don and Carey Harrison and Sarah as were Erwin and Joyce Cushing, Loren Cushing and Art Duckworth.
Bob and Pat Kitt and Bob and Sharon Walgren spent Thursday and Friday on a bus trip to attend the Mannheim Steam Roller concert and went on a tour of historical homes in Council Bluffs.
Dave Johnson, Chase and Hans of Loveland, Colo., spent Dec. 22 and 23 with Betty and Jane Johnson. They went hunting and ice fishing and had their Christmas together.
Jeri League of Phoenix, Ariz., visited Kenny and Diana Ham over Christmas. Ruby Ham spent Christmas Eve with them and they were all guests of Dick and Beth Kollmorgen and others on Christmas Day.
Noreen Christner and family were the big winners in the Chamber Drawings held Dec.23, winning the Consair computer system from BWTelcom.
Visitors in the home of Tom and Linda Moss over the Christmas holiday were Tom Moss Jr. of Ft. Lewis, Wash., Jennifer Moss of Edgewater, Md., Sally and Ed Grooms of Worland, Wyo., the Ted Grooms family of Casper Wyo., and the Greg Grooms family of Broken Arrow, Okla.

The Wauneta Breeze began its 100th year of operation. John Hann started the Breeze in 1887 at the age of 25 after completing a five-year printing apprenticeship in Hamilton, Ontario. He continued to publish the Breeze until 1920, selling to M.W. Frasier. Much of the paper was syndicated news which came on boilerplates, ready for the press, local news was set by hand. A subscription cost $1.10.
Roger Minneman flew to Waynesville, N.C., to spend part of the holidays with his mother, Alberta Haller and sister, Sherrill Metzger. The trip was a surprise gift from his family.
Members of Mrs. Hilda Nordhausen’s family gathered at her home for a pre-Christmas dinner on Sunday. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brunkhorst, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Pursley, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Upton and Abbie of Grand Island, Becky Erickson of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Pursley and boys, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Pursley and Zach, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mullanix, Jim and Mitch Mullanix, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Stahr of Lincoln and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Gockley and family.

Eleven cub scout members of Wauneta Dens 2 and 3 flew to McCook on a regularly scheduled Frontier flight out of Imperial. The trip was part of a program to stimulate interest in the airline service.The Imperial Chamber contributed $37.50 toward the fare required.Orville Erickson, representing the Boy Scouts, and Eddie Wilcox, Den Mother, accompanied the boys. They were met in McCook for the return trip. Making the trip were: Ricky Wilcox, Myron Redden, Kevin Prior, Ricky Heldenbrand, Karl Hoff, Craig Kitt, Terry Kitt, Kent Richards, Rex Walgren, Steve Burham and Jim Brown.
Jo Webber was installed as Honored Queen of Jobs Daughter. Other elected officers were Marcia Rueter as Senior Princess, Judy Baxter of Palisade as Junior Princess, Janibeth Hood of Palisade as Guide and Patty Weber as Marshall.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fanning and Judy and Mrs. Warren Buffington and Don were Monday afternoon callers of Mrs. Junior Kitt.
Friday night a group from the Eden Church went caroling, calling on the aged, widows and left boxes of cookies. Ronnie Dean Egle was a guest of Mrs. Leonard Gauger while his parents were caroling.
The Stock families had a family dinner Christmas Day at the Legion Hall. Attending were Mr. and Mrs Clarence Sandman and boys of Cambridge, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lorance and Richard of Stratton, Mr. and Mrs. Omer Colson and family of Cambridge, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Wheeler and family of Dix, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Stock, the Harlan, Bill and Byron Stock families and Mrs. Carrie Kelley.

On Tuesday, Dec. 31 the voters in Wauneta will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not to build a new bridge in east Wauneta. The estimated cost of the bridge is $6,168.00; $3,679.50 from the city and $2,478.50 in federal funds.
Mr. and Mrs. Christy Gauger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McBride, Ben and Walter McBride were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. George McBride.
Mrs. Christina Phillips and daughters of Maywood are visiting Mrs. Phillips mother, Mrs. Fannie Osmera.
C. W. Pribbeno and family left Saturday morning for a two weeks visit with relatives near Verdon and Falls City.
Henry Wicke spent Friday in Ludell, Kan., and drove to Estes Park on Wednesday.

Newly elected village board members Tony Cribelli and Rod Rector were sworn into office and joined board members Lloyd Sinner, Otis Knotwell and Marv Hamilton in conducting village business. Cribelli and Rector replaced Al Wilkins and Steve Noble who opted not to seek another term.
Longtime URNRD Board Member Gene Haarberg retired after 28 years on the board.
Bill and Rhonda Bischoff were awarded first place in Heritage of Wauneta’s Christmas lighting contest. Second place went to Jiggs and Pat Crapson and third to Harry and Nola Straub.
R.J. and Jana Mintling attended the graduation ceremonies of Rosalind Weber at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Bob and Bev Troudt attended the graduation of Shanna Bardsley and reception following for Rosalind, Shanna and two friends.
Elsie Becker visited Otto and Ida Bartels Sunday afternoon and enjoyed playing Christmas music, Elsie on the piano and Otto on the Hawaiian guitar.
Brian and Michelle Harchelroad and Dalton, Everett and Louise Stamm, Chad DeWester and Wynona Springer took Jan and Gary DeWester to dinner at the Coppermill in McCook Thursday evening on their 37th anniversary.

The Palisade School is the first Nebraska school to implement a four-day week. The legislature adopted a new law on attendance requirements last year, making way for the change at the Palisade school. Previously, students had to attend school a required number of days which was changed to 1,080 hours per year. Palisade had already lengthened class periods from 50 minutes to 62, with a half-day dismissal on Friday. Friday mornings included labs, elective classes, etc. The four-day week was easy to implement.
The Round-a-Bout Extension Club ate dinner at the Senior Citizens dinner as a group and attended the grade school Christmas program in the afternoon.
Members of the Methodist church choir and their leader, Cindy Sandman, and other parents met at 3:00 Sunday, going caroling around town. They went to the rest home to give a program, then met at the church to eat sloppy joes and snacks.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sandman returned home Wednesday after spending three weeks visiting friends and relatives in Mesa and Apache Junction, Ariz.
Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Iville Green on the 17th for a Christmas coffee and cake were Elise Haarberg, Dora Denker, Bea Fye, Clara McBride and Bob Fye.
Linda Rietsch, Pam Rietsch, Edna Keiser, Leta Brunkhorst and Alma McBride met in McCook Wednesday to eat lunch together.
Margie Kitt was a caller on Dec. 16 in the home of Lois and Arwyn West who were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary that day.

Eleven people won $5 in Christmas drawings sponsored by the Wauneta Commercial Club. They included Jane Wilson, Mrs. E. W. Hettinger, Mabel Dicke, Mrs. Ruby Collins, Cindy Moon, Russell Burke, Wallace Denton, Page Johnston, Randy Gerih, Jane Crapson and Lloyd Redden.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Larson celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday with a covered dish dinner and cake reception held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, planned by their daughter, Mrs. Eugene Haarberg.
John Kitt received the God and Country Award of Scouting Sunday morning at Mt. Zion. Rev. Ernst presented the award. A group of scouts were honor attendants.
Lt. Col. and Mrs. E.B. Campbell came Sunday for a few days visit in the homes of her brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Skelton and family and Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Skelton and family. Lt. Col. Campbell is retiring from the army and they were enroute from New York to their home in San Francisco.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sutherland of Long Beach, Calif., arrived Friday evening to spend two weeks in the parental C.J. Sutherland and Herman Nordhausen homes.
Mrs. Gertrude McCallum and Mrs. Nelson Burham entertained the Embroidery Club at a 12:30 luncheon Wednesday afternoon at the McCallum home.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walgren entertained members of the Methodist choir at a Christmas coffee in their home Wednesday evening following choir practice.

A corn husking bee was held for Elmer Harrison Friday. Thirty-two men turned out. The women came in and helped out with the dinner. All the corn was gathered but a few acres.
Sunday dinner guests at the Hal Fanning home were Jesse Stinnette and family, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Oliver, Mrs. Metcalf and George Metcalf.
Mrs. Ralph Grosbach was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Cocklin Thursday.
Audrey Dunn returned home from a vacation from the army Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lute Troxel and family from Hamlet spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Orley Troxel and family.

We believe last Sunday was the first time in Wauneta’s history that there was no Christmas service at the M.E. Church on that day since the church was built.
A wagon load of young people went to Parnell skating Tuesday afternoon.
Winnie Gibson took a bath in the lake Monday night through the ice while skating.
Jay Person has been entertaining corn shellers during the holidays.
C. A. Nesmith and family, Geo Smith and family, James Nesmith and wife and Rev. Andreas and family ate turkey with Ashby Morrison and family Christmas Day.

Palisade Elevator to venture into the fertilizer business. According to Cathy Humphrey, head manager of the Wright-Lorenz branch in Palisade, the plant should be open before farmers begin fertilizing fields in the spring. Joe Vrbas will manage the plant’s operation, assisted by Jim Hicks.
Father Greg Pawloski of St. John Catholic Church in Wauneta and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imperial returned from a trip to Egypt Nov. 30. He spent a month in Cairo for a conference of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests of which he is the leader, or Responsible, in the United States.
Jack Maddux of Wauneta was named the 2000 Nebraska Cattleman of the Year during the Nebraska Cattlemen Convention held in Kearney.
Jan Huser flew from Denver Nov. 16 to London, England, where she met nephew Abdulla Alfoory. They visited his brother there, then flew to Muscat, Oman, where she was a guest of her niece, Lori, and Abdulla, Samyah, Saeed, Saif, Sultan and Samer. She had the privilege of meeting Irish President Mary McAleese and visited many places of interest.
Paul and Elnora Kitt returned from a six-day tour of Branson, Mo., with a group of two bus loads of people from across Nebraska.
Tony and Jan Cribelli attended the National Rodeo finals in Las Vegas last week.

Proof of insurance will be necessary to register motor vehicles in Nebraska, beginning Jan. 1, 1986, according to Kay Hazard, Chase County Treasurer.
The Alvin Christensens and Glen and Edna Christensen attended the McCook College Christmas musical Sunday evening. Rhonda Christensen was a member of the chorus, and the pizzaz, jazz and college bands.
Mabel Kohne was hostess to a cooperative salad luncheon Saturday evening with kitchen staff, members of the janitor’s crew and office help from the Wauneta school as guests.
Dallis Breese took several Wauneta Job’s Daughters to Lincoln over the weekend to attend the installation of Tammy Collins, daughter of former residents Joan and Tom Collins into Job’s at Lincoln. Girls attending were Linn Hendrix, Lee Anne Green, Luanne Evans, Nikki McBride, Brenda Breese and Lynette Lawson. They were guests of Jerry Ruth Schluckebier in Lincoln. Teresa DeWester and Mary Maddux were also there.

An estimated 400 persons attended John Deere Day in Wauneta last Wednesday with about 100 taking in the free movie at the theatre.
An estimated 1000 persons attended the grand opening of the V. B. Johnston Hardware in Wauneta Saturday. The hardware store was expanded when Dwight Hoff built a new food store and the wall was taken out between the buildings. The local firm was established in 1904. Employees besides Mr. and Mrs. Johnston included Beulah DeHart, Rhea Kay Usher, Margaret DeHart, Wayne Salyer, Mrs. Wayne Salyer and Jerry Usher.
Vincent Nelson took over as the new postmaster Friday afternoon at the Palisade Post Office.
Twelve Boy Scouts received awards at a Court of Honor including: Donald Polly, Mike Ough, John Kitt, Orville Erickson, Tom Heldenbrand, Neil Christensen, Dick Buffington, Douglas McCallum, Raymond Gunderson, Danny Jeffries, Jack Fanning and Larry Kitt.
Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Denker and Mrs. Della Fanning were hosts at a birthday party Friday evening at the Legion Hall honoring Patty Denker and Jack Fanning on their 13th birthdays. There were 32 present.
The Eden Sunshine Club met with Mrs. Lawrence Rueter. Mrs. Ivan Brunkhorst was a guest.

A number of friends surprised Mrs. M.E. Bride Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Fox. A number of nice gifts were received by this esteemed lady. A dainty lunch was served at the close of the afternoon.

J. W. Green and Wiley attended a reunion of the Green family in Mountain Grove, Mo., this past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Brown entertained the high school faculty at a turkey dinner Wednesday evening.
