Wauneta-Palisade elementary students collected a total of 818 pounds of food between the two attendance centers, to be donated to a local food pantry.
Going door-to-door in Wauneta and Palisade collecting the food, the effort was both a whole-elementary collaboration and a competition between classes for the cause.
The fifth-grade class netted the most pounds of food, winning the competition. The sixth grade class baked holiday cookies for all classes to share on Monday, with a celebration to be hosted that day in Palisade when the food was taken to the pantry by both elementaries.
The delivery of the food was postponed due to the sub-zero temperatures Monday, but the food will be delivered later in the week.
