The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos advanced to Tuesday’s district championship games with subdistrict wins over Hitchcock County and Wallace.
The Broncos were seeded first in subdistricts and played Hitchcock County Feb. 16.
WP opened the game with a 7-0 run behind baskets by Greg Gaston and Chase Rathe.
The Falcons closed the gap to 7-4, before Gaston nailed a three-pointer and Cash Yearous grabbed a steal and made a layup to end the quarter.
A basket by Rathe and three-pointer by Yearous extended WP’s lead to 17-4 before Hitchcock County reeled off six straight points. A basket by Dalton Harchelroad stopped the Falcons’ run.
A steal and layup by Rathe and one free throw by Tyler Davis rounded out scoring for WP in the quarter. Hitchcock County scored the final four points of the half to make the score 22-14.
The Falcons opened the second half with six-straight points, cutting WP’s lead to two.
Baskets by Brody Nordhausen, Davis and Yearous and a three-pointer by Joel Maris put the Broncos back into the driver’s seat, 31-22.
The first two minutes of the fourth quarter were marred by fouls and turnovers before the teams settled down and scoring was hectic down the stretch.
Davis, Yearous and Rathe made baskets down the stretch for the Broncos and Davis, Gaston, Yearous and Rathe all made free throws in the later stages of the 48-28 win.
Yearous notched a double-double in the contest with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Yearous also had six steals and three assists.
Rathe also finished in double figures with 13 points.
Davis scored six points and had eight rebounds.
Two days later WP faced Wallace with the season on the line.
The Wildcats came ready to play. The Bronco offense got five points from Gaston, three by Caid Doetker and two points by Davis, leaving WP trailing 10-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Nordhausen and Rathe, along with Gaston, Doetker and Davis, scored in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Gaston as time ran out in the half pushed WP into the lead, 27-26.
Behind 10 third quarter points by Rathe, WP extended its lead to 41-35 at the end of three quarters. Like Gaston at the end of the first half, Rathe made a late three-pointer.
Additional three-pointers in the fourth quarter by Rathe and Gaston ensured WP’s 58-43 win.
The pair led WP with 17 and 20 points, respectively.
Davis, Nordhausen and Gaston each had five rebounds for the Broncos.
Gaston had seven assists and Rathe five.
Gaston also had six steals.
Tuesday, the Broncos traveled to Southern Valley to take on Giltner in the district championship game.

WP ends the season with a 15-9 record.
Other district matchups were Parkview Christian versus Exeter-Milligan, Mead against Riverside, Wynot and CWC, Anselmo-Merna up against Mullen and Garden County facing Crawford.
