Chase County Commissioners Dave Hogsett, Chuck Vette and Don Weiss, Jr. approved plans for a new parking lot at the Chase County Courthouse during the Feb. 13 commissioners’ meeting.

Jeff Tidyman attended the meeting to discuss resurfacing the courthouse parking lot. Commissioners had asked Tidyman to survey the lot and take over the bidding process.

Tidyman said the project covers slightly over 16,000 square feet. The county would tear out the current lot, while the winning bidder would do the dirt work.

The project is expected to cost somewhere around $100,000. Tidyman estimated the cost to be around eight dollars per square feet and will send out bids with work expected to begin this spring.

While Tidyman was on hand, he also presented a plan for a possible new county building. The new facility would hold the Department of Health and Human Services’ offices and county extension offices.

Additional space would allow for Veteran’s Affairs and the county transit office to move into the building. The proposed site for the building would be on the south side of the fairgrounds.

Low to average cost for a  2,600 square fee building was estimated to be $371,894.

Weiss said at this time the county’s priorities should be a new hospital and fire hall. Weiss added that it’s important to keep in mind that the Veterans’ Affairs office and transit office are important to the Senior Center.

Bids have been requested for new equipment for the county’s dispatch office. Weiss said he’d like to see the bids be close to Imperial in hopes that the winning business would respond quickly in the equipment had problems.

The commissioners had hoped to find grants to pay for a portion of the cost, but do not anticipate finding any at this time. The expense will instead come out of the inheritance fund.

The next meeting of the Chase County Commissioners will be Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 8 a.m. MT at the county courthouse.
