Wrestling season ended Saturday for the Wauneta-Palisade team as no wrestlers were able to qualify for the state meet.

Colton and Cody Barrett each finished a win away from qualifying.

Coach Chad Cochran said Friday was a rough day.

No one on the team picked up a win and officials decided to add an extra round in the evening which meant many kids who had showered and prepared to go home had to wrestle once more. That group included Evan Nordhausen and Willis Christner.

With rounds finishing up late Friday night, Cochran was glad the team had made plans to spend the night in North Platte.

Cochran felt both Barretts wrestled well in their consolation matches Saturday.

Cody Barrett bounced back from a first round loss in the 170-pound bracket to pin Kayson Fassler of Maxwell in the third period of their match.

Trailing 6-7 at the end of the second period, Cody Barrett got two take downs and took a 10-8 lead before picking up the pin.

“Cody was a little anxious heading into his final match,” said Cochran.

In what would be his final match as a Bronco, Cochran said the match was going well and Cody Barrett was close to getting a pin. Nixon was able to escape, however, and got the pin in the second period.

Colton Barrett wrestled late into his first round match at 126 pounds, before losing by pin in the third period.

In his first consolation match, Colton Barrett held an 8-4 lead before pinning Sutherland’s Jacob Lantis early in the third period.

In his final match of the season, Colton Barrett lost by pin to Mullen’s Jade Lovett in the second period.
