The Wauneta-Palisade wrestlers stayed close to home last week and attended the Chase County Invitational Saturday.
Cody Barrett finished 2-2 in the 170 pound weight class, good enough for fifth place. Barrett lost his first match of the day to third-place finisher Caine Haarberg of Chase County. Barrett bounced back with a win, but lost his third match to put him in the fifth-place match.
Coach Chad Cochran said he was happy with the way Barrett stepped up.
Angel Hinojosa won his first match of the day, defeating Nikolas Willis of Dundy County-Stratton. Willis had beaten Hinojosa at last week’s Dundy County-Stratton Invitational. Hinojosa was injured in Saturday’s match and didn’t wrestle the rest of the day.
In his first matches since December, Colton Barrett went 0-5 at 126 pounds.
“Colton had a couple matches that he probably should have won,” said Cochran. “Hopefully he just needs to get back into the swing of things.”
Willis Christner also hadn’t wrestled in a meet since December and went 0-2.
Evan Nordhausen went 0-2 in the 106-pound class.
Seth and Billy Straub were both injured and did not compete, but will hopefully return soon.
Cochran said he is worried the injury bug will continue to bite the team through the rest of the season.
Friday, WP will be at Trenton for the RPAC Invitational. On Jan. 29 WP travels to Curtis for the Medicine Valley Invitational.
The season rounds out with meets at Arapahoe and Southwest before districts begin Feb. 12.
