With a win over Arapahoe, the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team moved its record to over .500.

Cameo Rector started WP off on the right foot with baskets on the Broncos’ first two possessions.

After falling behind 4-5, WP went on a 12-5 run and took a 16-10 lead. The Warriors responded, coming back to tie the game at 19.

Five-straight points by Colby Cox helped WP hold a 24-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Broncos extended the lead early in the second quarter. Following an Arapahoe basket, WP used nice passing to get baskets from Ellie Lee, Faith Simpson and Rector.

A well-balanced offense helped WP pull further ahead in the second quarter, despite four Arapahoe three-pointers.

C. Cox had 10 points in the seconds quarter, to go with six by Simpson and four by Lee.

WP coach Matt Cox said the 16 minutes were the best half of basketball the team had played all season.

“We took care of the ball, shot well off the dribble and blocked out consistently,” said Coach Cox.

Arapahoe was able to cut into the Broncos lead in the third quarter when WP only made three field goals.

Leading 54-46 heading into  the fourth quarter, Simpson got a steal and layup early to increase the lead back to 10 points. Simpson then went 3-4 from the free throw line to help WP firm up its grip on the game and make the score 59-47.

After a C. Cox layup, Arapahoe made seven-straight points to narrow the lead to 61-54.

A basket by Simpson and three-pointer by Rector got WP back on track, before the Broncos finished off the game making three-of-six attempts from the charity stripe.

Lee finished with a double-double, notching 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Simpson and Cox each scored 21 points. Rector also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Simpson had eight rebounds and Skow had six.

Simpson also had seven steals and Lee and Simpson each had four assists.
