Wauneta-Palisade junior Angel Hinojosa took first place in the 145-pound weight class at last week’s season opening Elwood Invitational.
Sophomore Colton Barrett went 2-1 at the meet and placed third in the 126-pound class.
WP coach Chad Cochran said Hinojosa looked good with all three wins coming in the first first period.
“Angel was impressive to watch,” Cochran said. “I hope to see that intensity and aggressiveness continue and rub off on some of our younger wrestlers.”
Barrett lost his first match of the day to first-place finisher Dylan Zeleski of Overton, but battled back for two more wins.
“I was proud to see him fight back and win his next two matches,” said Cochran. “We were anxious to see how he would fit in at a heavier weight, going from 106 last year to 126. He held his own and seemed to do pretty well.”
Also wrestling for the Broncos were Evan Nordhausen and Daniel Christensen in the 106-pound weight class and Willis Christner in the 152-pound class.
Even though the three didn’t pick up a win, Cochran said he saw good things from the trio.
Nordhausen and Christensen faced the first and third place finishers.
Cochran said the invite was well run and gave the Broncos a glimpse of many teams it will face throughout the season.
Three of those teams will be at Southern Valley this week.
“This week will be a good chance to get some experience with them running a pool-type bracket, giving each guy a chance to wrestle five times,” Cochran said.
