Five generations were enjoying getting acquainted at the ElDorado Manor in Trenton when the family gathered  Sunday, Aug. 7. The five generations included mother Sabrina Sandoval of Wiggins, Colo., with baby, Mandy, grandmother Teresa Maddux of Platteville, Colo., great grandfather Robert Keating and great, great grandmother Betty Keating. Mandy is Betty’s first great, great grandchild.

Nola and Harry Straub observed their 45th anniversary Sunday, being married in Wauneta’s Church of Christ Aug. 14, 1960.

Scott and Ellen Denker, Ben and Nikita of Rose Hill, Kan., were guests of Twilla Denker Thursday to Monday. Friday evening Nikita was baptized at a service performed by Pastor Greg Stuckwisch at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Lee and Karen Denker.

Patricia Hackert celebrated her 75th birthday at a family gathering of over 130 of husband Donald’s family at Grand Lake Lodge near Grand Lake, Colo. Son Mark and wife Jane and children of Evansville, Ind., were overnight guests on July 23. Daughter Mary Margaret Estrada and daughter Sarah of Monterey, Calif., surprised her, being there when she arrived.

Ruby Anderson spent several days with Richard and Dot Anderson at Parker, Colo.

Aug. 16, 1990

Former Village Board Members Dallis Breese and Connie Maxfield were presented plaques of appreciation at the Village’s board meeting Monday evening in recognition for their service.

Rodney and Esther Einspahr celebrated their 40th anniversary at the Enders Lake Golf Course Saturday, Aug. 11, the occasion was hosted by their children with 55 relatives and friends enjoying a buffet dinner. Nine couples joined Esther and Rodney for a round of golf preceding the dinner.

Anna Hewitt was a guest of Kent and Sharon Buffington, Megan and Angi Friday to celebrate her 81st birthday.

The Denker family reunion was held Saturday, Aug. 4 at the American Legion Hall with 86 descendants of William and Sophia Denker and two guests attending.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harchelroad returned home from a week spent in Switzerland. They saw the National Day celebration at Interlakin, commemorating 699 years as a country. Included on their tour were the Swiss Alps and a cruise on Thun Lake.

50 years ago this week

August 19, 1965

Sunday, Aug. 8 Mr. and Mrs. James Jirik celebrated their 40th anniversary with a picnic in the Palisade Park, attended by friends and relatives. Ice cream and cake were also enjoyed by several who stopped in the afternoon to surprise Jim and Orpha.

The annual wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bley, Mr. and Mrs. Don Egle, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Neuenschwander and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Bley whose anniversaries are all on Aug. 1 was held in McCook Tuesday evening with dinner together, followed by an evening of bowling.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Sandman and family hosted a combined welcome home dinner for Henry Wicke Jr. and a farewell for Mr. and Mrs. Bill Yandle and family. Henry Jr. had just returned from two years in Japan with the Navy and the Yandles are moving to Iowa.

A farewell was held Sunday at the Hamlet Union Church after the evening service for the Ralph Wach family who are leaving for Oregon. Also leaving for Oregon are the Dale Covert family and Vern Busher family.

 

75 years ago this week

August 14, 1940

52nd annual Chase County Fair - first big show day on Aug. 29.

Twenty-five friends surprised Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hoff Tuesday night on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary. Pinochle was the diversion of the evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Arch Counce and Eda Marie Snoke are vacationing in the mountains this week.

Mrs. Bill Dudek and Mrs. Art Newman entertained at the Newman home Wednesday afternoon at a gathering of old schoolmates. Old times were the discussion of the afternoon, followed by games. Those present included Mrs. Mildred Hampton, Mrs. M.A. Jones of Booneville, Mo., Mrs. Dorothy Romine, Mrs. Shirley Coker and Mary Jane, Mrs. Lester Lenhart, Mrs. Albert Wahl of Omaha, Mrs. Percy Goodman, Mrs. Bernard Modrell, Mrs. Ray Eilliot and Miss Helen Farmer.

 

100 years ago this week

August 19, 1915

Big rain Monday p.m. Very heavy south. Heavy thunder and sharp lightning. Lightning damaged some phones in the Narrow Divide area and Mr. Mohler has been out fixing them up.

Shocked grain being damaged by the rain.

Harvest is about over.

The wind don’t blow much lately and nearly all the farmers are out of water.

The Farmers Elevator company is busy enlarging their elevator at Enders.

Cloyd Nesmith helped Geo. Smith pull well rods Mon.
