With the end of the school year looming, plans were put in place for work to be completed over the summer during the monthly meeting of the Wauneta-Palisade school board on Monday.
A bid of $12,500 from Pivot Electric to update wiring at the Palisade Attendance Center was approved. After the work is completed the building will be up to code with all new wiring in closed conduit. Sandman reminded board members that the building long term plan needs to be looked at once more.
Approval was also given for an overhead door to be installed for less than $7,000 in the ag shop in Wauneta. The new door would go on the east side of the building south of the current door, adding another bay for a bus.
Other updates to be considered in the future are wiring upgrades in the weight room, locker room heaters and stage at the Wauneta Attendance Center.
Tabled for a future meeting was last year’s estimate of $10,675 from Samway’s of McCook for carpet tiles for the third floor of the Wauneta building. Some of the third floor has been taken care of and board members chose to hold off on a decision until it could be clarified what type of tiles would be used. Jon Anderjaska also suggested getting a new bid for rolled carpeting.
While reviewing the month’s expenditures, Anderjaska said the school has received 54 percent of its tax askings and expects the rest to come in soon. Bill Bischoff pointed out that the school is at 81 percent of its budget, adding that it will be “nip and tuck” with the new fiscal year not beginning until September. Though the current fiscal year is 75 percent complete, according to Principal Roger Reikofski, board members expect the expenditures to slow down over the summer.
During Reikofski’s report, he said the new playground at Palisade is being enjoyed by the students. He said 26,000 pounds of mulch went in around the equipment.
Reikofski said the school events of the past weeks have been going well and that several more are on the horizon. Thursday will be a preschool open house in Palisade. The kindergarten class with put on a play the afternoon of May 15. Elementary field day will take place on the 19th. Kindergarten through second grade students will participate in the morning and third through sixth grades in the afternoon. Elementary awards will be given out on the last day of school, May 20. Immediately following an early dismissal that day, the school will host a bike rodeo.
