If the interest shown at a Jan. 9 information meeting is any indication, the efforts to bring a Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to Imperial this spring will be successful.

The replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., is owned by the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) of Flint, Texas. All of its employees are veterans.

The replica is 80 percent of the actual wall size and contains 100 percent of its content. A computerized system gives information on where to locate specific names on the wall.

The Imperial Chamber of Commerce, along with VFW Post 4688 and its auxiliary, are spearheading the effort to bring the Traveling Wall here, tentatively April 22-26.

They have enlisted the help of several organizations and the county commissioners, who voted last week to commit money from the county keno fund to bring the Traveling Wall to the community.

Preliminary approval from Chase County Schools has also been given to set up the Traveling Wall on the Wellington football field, where it would be open 24 hours a day.

Funds to secure the dates here have been submitted to AVTT, but details are not yet confirmed, said Jana Pribbeno, who is working on behalf of the Chamber and VFW Post in planning the event.

Thirty people representing several organizations, the city of Imperial and Chase County attended the Jan. 9 meeting.

At the meeting, the group heard from Maggie Repass of McCook, who coordinated the Traveling Wall’s visit to McCook in 2013.

Veterans memorial

If the Traveling Wall dates are secured for April, it will also serve as a kick-off for a fundraising effort by VFW Post 4688 and Auxiliary to establish a permanent veterans memorial in Imperial honoring all veterans.

One of the sites being considered is on the Chase County Courthouse grounds.

Anyone interested in contributing to the permanent veterans memorial in Imperial can send donations to: VFW Post 4688, Box 518, Imperial NE 69033.
